The best time to start learning DeFi was two years ago. The second best time is now. Here is a practical starting point that costs nothing except time.

Step 1: Get the Terminology Right

Before anything else, make sure you understand these terms:

Blockchain — a distributed ledger that records transactions permanently
Smart contract — code running on a blockchain that executes automatically
DeFi — financial services built on smart contracts without intermediaries
Gas — the fee paid to process transactions on Ethereum
Wallet — software that manages your private keys and lets you interact with DeFi
Flash loan — an uncollateralized loan repaid within a single transaction

Do not move forward until these concepts are clear. Glossing over fundamentals is the most common reason people make costly mistakes in crypto.

Step 2: Set Up a Wallet Safely

Download MetaMask from metamask.io only — not from any other source. Write your seed phrase on paper and store it somewhere safe. Never share it with anyone. Never type it into any website.

Do not put real money in your wallet until you understand what you are doing.

Most people skip this step because they think it is too technical. It is not. It requires patience and good educational resources.

Step 5: Start Small

When you are ready to interact with real DeFi protocols, start with amounts you can afford to lose entirely. DeFi mistakes are usually irreversible. Small early mistakes are tuition fees.
