How to keep a searchable archive of your AI chat history

If you use ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Grok every day, your chat history slowly turns into a personal knowledge base: prompts that worked, code snippets, research notes, decisions. The problem is that it lives in several places, and each one has its own search.

Here is a simple way to keep it all in one searchable place.

1. Export from each assistant

Most assistants let you request a data export from their settings (look for a data controls or privacy section). You usually get an email with a download, often JSON or HTML. Do this every few weeks, or before you delete old chats.

2. Keep the archive local

A local archive means your conversations stay on your own machine, work offline, and do not depend on any one provider keeping old chats around. If some of those chats contain client or work details, local storage is also the more cautious default.

3. Search across everything at once

The real win is one search box for all assistants. Useful things to search for: a library name, an error message, a client name, or a phrase you remember from a good answer.

4. Export what you need

When a conversation is worth keeping as a document, export it to Markdown or a file you can drop into your notes.

The tool we make for this

Disclosure: we build Chat Locker, which does exactly this. It imports conversations from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok, lets you search and export them, and stores everything locally by default. Cloud sync and team sharing are optional, local use is free and no account is needed. You can see how it works here.

Whatever tool you use, the habit is what matters: export regularly, keep a copy you control, and make it searchable.
