The Annual Cloud Development Environment Survey

Hi everyone πŸ‘‹

I am thrilled to announce we have launched the first-ever Annual Cloud Development Environment survey!

We see this as a huge milestone to shape what is becoming one of the major drivers of software engineering for decades to come.

CDEs

Cloud Development Environments (CDEs) are rapidly shaping how teams build software. As Gergely Orosz from The Pragmatic Engineer put it:

(...) many big companies use cloud-based developer environments, so the build doesn’t happen on your own machine, but on a much more powerful and remote one.

In fact, Gartner predicts that 60% of cloud workloads will be built and deployed using Cloud Development Environments (CDEs) by 2026.

Here's how we do it with CodeSandbox:

CodeSandbox CDE

There is definitely much more to be said about CDEs. I'm currently writing an extensive blog post on this topic, so subscribe if you'd like to be notified!

Understanding the future of CDEs

Even though there are clear signs that CDEs are set to become a cornerstone of software engineering teams, little is known about the current state of CDE adoption, how it interfaces with AI, and the challenges and benefits of moving local workloads into the cloud.

So, we’re establishing a global research group of 10,000+ developers and engineering managers whose insights will result in the first-ever annual report on β€œThe State of Cloud Development Environments”.

That's where you come in! I'm inviting you to join this research group and share your insights on our survey.

We welcome everyone's point of view, no matter your role, experience, or opinion on CDEs. With your honest feedback, we will uncover the true state of CDEs and shape how CodeSandbox can bring a powerful yet accessible CDE experience to every developer out there.

The survey is open until October 25th at 7 pm CET / 1 pm ET / 10 am PT. It should take 5–8 minutes to complete.

Thank you for helping us shape the future of coding!
