You don't need HyperText Markup Language to build a website: this Markup Language lets you export directly from Sketch and Figma

Did you know that HTML5 isn't the only markup language on the web?

SVG1.1 is fully supported by all browsers. It has a coordinate layout system, which some people find easier to use than CSS-based layout. Furthermore, you can nest SVG tags. Most design tools, such as Figma and Sketch, can export to SVG automatically. However, you'll need to tweak the exported file afterwards, since the export process isn't perfect. SVG is fully integrated into DOM and you can use it with CSS. Who knew we had an HTML alternative in the browser already?

MathML has partial support in Safari (WebKit) and Firefox (Gecko).

Due to a lack of interest, SVG 2 was never fully implemented. It's currently in draft.

XHTML is a deprecated version of HTML.

Stay tuned to next week, where we'll look at alternatives to styling with CSS. (No, not SCSS, SASS, or Stylus, but something new entirely.)
