When 5% of All Bitcoin Is at Stake, Coinbase Says the Quantum Clock Is Already Ticking

Coinbase says Bitcoin should start its quantum migration now

Bitcoin's biggest alarm bell of the week didn't come from a price chart. It came from the company safeguarding roughly one in twenty of every bitcoin ever created.

Coinbase — which custodies around 5% of the entire Bitcoin supply for banks, asset managers, and hedge funds — has urged the Bitcoin community to begin preparing for quantum computers right now, warning that the migration to quantum-safe cryptography will take years.

The argument is really about timing. No quantum machine today can crack a Bitcoin wallet, but researchers at Google have suggested a capable machine could appear as early as 2029. Because Bitcoin upgrades move at the speed of decentralized consensus — years of coordination, not a weekend patch — Coinbase says the time to design a plan is now, not when the hardware arrives.

What it's asking for is a careful, staged roadmap: building post-quantum signature support into Bitcoin's transaction format, letting active wallets adopt quantum-resistant or hybrid signatures early, and making sure reliable tooling exists for everyone, from casual holders to institutions running complex multi-party key setups.

One genuinely tricky question gets parked for later: what becomes of old, dormant wallets if legacy signature types are ever phased out. Coinbase's position is that this debate shouldn't slow down protection for everyone else — and any future rescue path for late movers would itself have to be quantum-safe.

My take? This isn't a story about price; it's a story about credibility. If Bitcoin wants to keep its "digital gold" reputation for decades, proving it can future-proof its cryptography might be one of the most important things it does. No need to panic. But if you hold BTC for the long haul, you'll want to watch whether developers turn this call into real proposals over the coming months.
