Wix GDPR Compliance: What the Platform Does and What You Still Need to Handle

Wix makes building a website easy. GDPR compliance is a different problem — one Wix can't solve for you, even though it provides some helpful tools.


What Wix Handles

Credit where it's due. Wix has invested in privacy compliance infrastructure, and it's worth understanding what's genuinely covered before focusing on the gaps.

Data Processing Agreement (DPA): Wix offers a DPA that covers their role as your data processor. This is a legal requirement under GDPR, and Wix makes it available through their legal documentation.

EU data center options: Wix operates data centers in EU regions, which helps address data residency requirements and simplifies the data transfer picture for EU-based businesses.

GDPR consent checkboxes in forms: Wix's native form builder allows you to add GDPR consent checkboxes. These can be configured to be unchecked by default — a requirement for valid consent under GDPR.

Built-in cookie consent functionality: Wix provides a basic cookie consent notification tool that can be enabled from your site settings.

Wix Contacts data export and deletion: The Wix Contacts section of your dashboard lets you export a contact's data and delete it. This is the foundation for handling Data Subject Access Requests (DSARs) from within Wix.

The key point: Wix is GDPR-compliant as a data processor — they handle your data responsibly, maintain appropriate safeguards, and have the legal agreements in place. The issue is what happens on your Wix site — the third-party apps you've installed, the scripts running on your pages, and the data flowing to services outside of Wix's control.


What Wix Doesn't Handle (and You Must)

This is where most Wix site owners have real compliance exposure. None of the following is handled by Wix on your behalf.

Third-party apps and embeds. Every Wix app you install and every third-party embed on your site is a new data processor. When you add a live chat widget, an email marketing integration, or a booking system, you're creating a new data processing relationship. You're responsible for disclosing it, and you may need a DPA with the vendor.

Your privacy policy content. Wix provides a privacy policy template. It's a starting point — not an accurate description of what your site actually does. If you're running Mailchimp, Google Analytics, and a booking tool, your privacy policy needs to name those services specifically. The template won't do that for you.

Whether your consent banner actually blocks scripts before consent. Wix's built-in cookie notification shows a banner — but it doesn't block third-party scripts from firing before a visitor consents. Under GDPR, non-essential cookies and trackers must not load until after active consent is given. A banner that's decorative rather than functional isn't compliant.

Marketing email opt-in compliance. If you collect email addresses through Wix forms and send marketing, you need explicit opt-in consent for EU users. Wix gives you the form fields; you're responsible for making sure the consent flow is correct.

DSAR responses across all your systems. Wix lets you handle data stored in Wix Contacts. It doesn't help with data held in your email marketing platform, your booking system, your CRM, or your payment processor. A complete DSAR response covers all of those.


The Wix App Market Problem

Wix has over 500 apps in its marketplace. Many are excellent — but each one that connects to an external service is a new data processor you're responsible for.

Here's what that looks like in practice:

  • Live chat: Tidio, Intercom, or similar tools connect to their own servers the moment they load on your page. Visitor IP addresses, session data, and chat transcripts are processed externally.
  • Email marketing: Mailchimp, ActiveCampaign, Klaviyo integrations sync your contacts to external platforms with their own data practices.
  • Analytics: Google Analytics and Hotjar both run tracking scripts that collect behavioral data before most visitors have consented to anything.
  • Booking systems: Tools like Wix Bookings are native, but third-party booking integrations send customer data to external servers.
  • Payment gateways: PayPal, Stripe, and other payment integrations are separate data processors handling financial and identity data.

When you install a Wix app, you're creating a new data processing relationship that you're legally responsible for disclosing in your privacy policy. You need to name the service, describe what data it receives, and explain why.

The problem for most Wix site owners: they've installed apps over months or years without tracking which ones connect to external services. The list of actual data processors on a typical Wix site is longer than anyone realizes until they look.


Step 1 — Find Out What's Running on Your Wix Site

Before you change anything, you need a complete picture of what your site is actually doing with visitor data.

  • Offer genuine opt-in — not just a "by continuing to browse, you agree" notice

  • Support Google Consent Mode v2 — required if you use Google Analytics or Google Ads

Step 3 — Update Your Privacy Policy

Wix's privacy policy template is a reasonable starting point. But it won't name your specific Wix apps or third-party integrations, and GDPR requires your policy to name every data processor.

Go through every app installed on your Wix site. For each one that connects to an external service, add that service to your privacy policy with:

  • The company name and contact details
  • What data they receive from your site
  • Why (the purpose)
  • A link to their own privacy policy

For a typical Wix site, this list might include Google Analytics, Hotjar, Mailchimp, Tidio, Stripe or PayPal, Facebook Pixel, and whatever booking tool you've connected. Each one needs its own entry.

Step 4 — Handle Email Marketing Consent

If you use Wix's email marketing tools or any third-party email platform integrated with Wix, you need to handle consent carefully for EU users.

GDPR requires:

  • Explicit opt-in — the visitor must actively agree to receive marketing emails. This cannot be bundled into a general "agree to terms" checkbox.
  • Unchecked by default — any marketing consent checkbox must start unchecked. A pre-checked box is not valid consent.
  • Specific language — the consent text should clearly describe what they're signing up for: "I agree to receive marketing emails from [Company Name]" — not vague language that could apply to anything.
  • Separate from other consent — marketing consent should be separate from consent to process a form submission or complete a transaction.

Wix forms support all of this — you can add GDPR consent checkboxes that are unchecked by default with specific consent language. The configuration is your responsibility, not Wix's.

If you've been collecting email subscribers without explicit GDPR-compliant consent, you may need to run a re-permission campaign before continuing to send marketing to EU contacts.


Step 5 — Set Up DSAR Handling

EU residents have the right to request all personal data you hold about them and ask you to delete it. Under GDPR, you have 30 days to respond. Under CCPA (for California residents), it's 45 days.

Wix lets you export and delete contact data from Wix Contacts. That handles the data stored within Wix's own systems. It doesn't cover:

  • Your email marketing platform (Mailchimp, ActiveCampaign, etc.)
  • Your payment processor (Stripe, PayPal)
  • Your live chat tool (Tidio, Intercom)
  • Your booking system
  • Any CRM or external tool in your stack

A proper DSAR response covers all of these. That means you need a process for searching every system, compiling the results, and responding to the requester — all within the regulatory deadline.

At minimum, set up:

  • A public email address or form where people can submit requests
  • A way to track the 30-day deadline from the submission date
  • A checklist of all systems to search when a request comes in
  • A response template confirming what you found or deleted
