1. Executive Summary
This security assessment evaluates the EigenCloud architecture—specifically its Liquid Restaking (LRT) accounting, Actively Validated Services (AVS) reward distribution logic, and L2 cross-chain state synchronization—against atomic capital attacks (Flash Loans).
Due to the protocol's high Total Value Locked ($6.235B+), it represents a high-value target for MEV searchers and malicious actors utilizing high-capital flash loans (via Aave, Uniswap v3, and Balancer). The analysis identified systemic vulnerabilities in oracle pricing dependency, intra-block reward accounting, and L1/L2 cross-chain state latency. Immediate mitigation is required to render flash-loan-assisted exploits economically unviable.
2. Identified Attack Vectors
Vector 1: Spot Price Oracle Manipulation via Low-Liquidity AMM Pools
- Severity: CRITICAL
-
Mechanism:
- An attacker borrows a massive amount of $ETH via a Flash Loan.
- The attacker executes a large swap on primary AMM pools (e.g., Uniswap v3 ezETH/WETH) to severely skew the spot exchange rate.
- EigenCloud’s collateral valuation module relies on
slot0or short-window TWAPs from these pools to price restaked assets. - The inflated exchange rate is used to mint over-collateralized synthetic assets or drain protocol borrow pools on L2 deployments within the same transaction.
- The attacker swaps back, repays the Flash Loan, and extracts the uncollateralized profit.
- Root Cause: Inadequate pricing fallback mechanisms and reliance on flash-loan-manipulable short-window oracles for high-TVL operations.
Vector 2: Intra-Block Yield Dilution & Reward Sandwiching
- Severity: HIGH
-
Mechanism:
- An attacker detects a pending
distributeRewards()transaction in the mempool for a high-yield AVS module. - The attacker front-runs the transaction by borrowing $ETH via a Flash Loan, restaking it immediately into EigenCloud to mint restaking derivatives (LRTs), increasing their share of the pool.
- The protocol executes
distributeRewards(), allocating a disproportionate amount of the yield to the attacker’s flash-minted share. - The attacker back-runs the transaction by redeeming/selling the LRTs and repaying the Flash Loan in the same block.
- An attacker detects a pending
- Root Cause: Lack of a minimum holding duration (epoch locking) or time-weighted average stake (TWAS) calculation for yield distribution, allowing zero-risk atomic yield harvesting.
Vector 3: Asymmetric L1/L2 Cross-Chain Slashing Arbitrage
- Severity: HIGH
-
Mechanism:
- An AVS validator gets slashed on L1. There is a processing/messaging delay before the slashing event updates the L2 exchange rate oracle.
- An attacker uses an L2 Flash Loan to borrow and deposit L2 tokens into EigenCloud at the pre-slashing (inflated) rate.
- Alternatively, the attacker flash-borrows L2 LRTs and redeems them before the cross-chain bridge message finalizes the reduced asset backing.
- The attacker
