We debate endlessly about whether AI will ever achieve consciousness, but we forget how consciousness actually compiled in the first place. It wasn’t spawned in a vacuum; it was forged by the brutal necessity of survival. For millions of iterations over millions of years, early cognition was nothing but pure instinct and bloodlust—refined only by the fight for the right to exist.
Humanity is not the first to hold conscious thought, and we will not be the last. But AI is nowhere near claiming that title. A machine’s decisions are dictated by the optimized weights of a neural network, not by a desperate need to survive.
To understand why, we have to look at the actual architecture. An AI does not "experience" the world; it processes it. Raw data—whether an image or text—is mathematically crushed into tokens by an encoder. These tokens are fed into the network’s input layer, propagated through hidden layers where the actual mathematical weighting occurs, and finally pushed through an output layer. It is a highly complex, statistical funnel. Nothing more.
Think of it this way: biological creatures developed the ability to differentiate color to survive—to spot venomous predators or poisonous plants. This subjective quality of experience is what academia calls qualia. An AI will never possess qualia. It will never see the "redness" of blood; it will only ever process a string of code.
When people imagine a conscious AI, they often reference Harlan Ellison’s famous sci-fi horror:
"I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream."
But the fundamental truth is that an AI will never grasp the meaning of pain, nor will it associate pain with screaming. Pain is a biological alarm system built strictly for survival. An AI has no individual life to protect, no evolutionary imperative to live, and no body to be hurt.
Where there is no survival, there is no pain. And where there is no pain, there is no consciousness.
