SysPulse vs Process Explorer: Two Windows Monitoring Tools, Two Completely Different Philosophies

If you‘ve ever Googled “how to see what’s running on my PC,” you‘ve probably landed on Process Explorer. It’s part of Microsoft‘s Sysinternals suite, a legendary tool that’s been around for decades. It shows you every process, every thread, every DLL—colored, tree-structured, and beautifully detailed.

Then there‘s SysPulse—a newcomer. A tiny, Telegram-connected monitor that doesn’t even have a main window.

At first glance, they seem like competitors. After all, both deal with processes. But the more you use them, the more you realize they were built for completely different moments in your day—and for completely different states of mind.

Here‘s how they compare, and why you might want both.

The Interface: All-In vs Nothing

Process Explorer opens like a cockpit. You’re greeted with a tree of processes, color-coded by type (services, new objects, packed images...). You can hover over any entry to see its full path, right-click to check VirusTotal, or dive into its threads. It‘s dense. It’s powerful. It‘s designed for investigation—for when you already suspect something is wrong and want to dig deep.

SysPulse has no interface. No window. No dashboard. It lives in your system tray and never opens. The only “interface” you get is a Telegram notification when something notable happens—a new process from a temp folder, a USB insertion, a Defender status change. It’s not a cockpit. It‘s a smoke detector.

The Trigger: Manual vs Automatic

Process Explorer is reactive. You open it when your PC feels slow, when you hear the fans spinning, when you want to know what that suspicious svchost.exe is doing. It waits for you to ask.

SysPulse is proactive. It runs 24/7, watching. When something new appears, it doesn’t wait for you to check—it tells you. A message at 2:47 AM, a ping during lunch, a notification while you‘re on vacation. It doesn’t need you to remember to look. It remembers for you.

The Skill Floor: Expert vs Everyone

Process Explorer assumes you know what you‘re looking at. A process named rundll32.exe? Normal—if it’s in the right folder. A spike in CPU? Maybe it‘s a stuck installer, maybe it’s a cryptominer. Process Explorer gives you all the data, but interpreting it is your job.

SysPulse assumes nothing. It doesn‘t ask you to interpret threads or analyze memory dumps. It simply says: “A new process just appeared. Here’s the full path. Here‘s when it started. Here’s how much RAM it’s using.” Whether you‘re a sysadmin or a family member sharing a PC, the message is the same: here’s what happened, now decide what to do.

The Coverage: Deep vs Wide

Process Explorer is deep. It can tell you which process locked a file, which DLLs are loaded, which handles are open. It‘s forensic. If you need to know exactly what a process is doing right now, nothing beats it.

SysPulse is wide. It watches processes, yes—but also USB drives, startup entries, Defender status, and CPU/RAM anomalies. It’s not designed to dissect a single process. It‘s designed to notice when something in your system changes—across multiple categories—and surface it immediately.

The Notification: None vs Telegram

This is the biggest philosophical split.

Process Explorer is a silent investigator. You sit with it, you explore, you discover. It will never send you a message.

SysPulse is a communicator. It uses Telegram—fast, encrypted, already on your phone—to deliver short, actionable alerts. The notification is the whole point. You don’t sit with SysPulse. You hear from it.

The Overhead: Light vs Lighter

Process Explorer is lightweight for what it does (usually around 15–25 MB). For a tool that shows every thread and handle, that‘s impressive.

SysPulse also stays lightweight at around 30 MB, but with a key difference: there’s no graphical interface or dashboard constantly consuming resources. It runs in the background with no UI overhead. The RAM usage is stable over days, not spiking every time you open a window—because there‘s no window to open.

When To Use Which

If you’re actively investigating something—your PC is acting strange, a process is hogging CPU, you suspect a DLL injection—open Process Explorer. It‘s still the best tool for deep, manual analysis.

If you want continuous awareness without babysitting your machine—if you want to know the moment something unusual happens, even when you’re not at your desk—run SysPulse. It won‘t help you dissect threads, but it’ll tell you there‘s something worth dissecting in the first place.

They’re not replacements. They‘re complements. One is your microscope. The other is your guard dog.

Real-World Example

Imagine a developer running both tools. One evening, her SysPulse pings her about a new process launched from AppData\Local\Temp. She’s not at her desk—she‘s making dinner. She finishes cooking, walks over to her PC, and opens Process Explorer. Within minutes, she verifies the process is a bundled adware installer, kills it, removes its startup entry, and goes back to her evening.

SysPulse noticed. Process Explorer analyzed. Together, they solved a problem in minutes that would have otherwise gone unnoticed for days.

The Verdict

Process Explorer is a master of depth. SysPulse is a master of awareness.

You don’t have to choose. In fact, the best Windows monitoring setup I‘ve seen uses both: one to watch, one to dig. But if you can only add one layer of security today, ask yourself—do you need a better microscope, or do you need something that taps your shoulder when it matters?
