AWS AI Practitioner Certification Validity, Renewal & Retake Policy

The AWS Certified AI Practitioner certification is a foundational-level AWS credential designed for professionals who want to validate their understanding of artificial intelligence, machine learning, generative AI concepts, and related AWS services. It is suitable for business analysts, IT support professionals, product managers, project managers, sales professionals, marketing teams, and early-career cloud learners who work with AI/ML technologies but may not necessarily build production AI solutions.
Overview of AWS Certified AI Practitioner
The AWS Certified AI Practitioner exam is categorized as a Foundational certification. The exam duration is 90 minutes, and the exam contains 65 questions. The listed exam cost is 100 USD, excluding applicable taxes or local pricing variations. Candidates can take the exam through a Pearson VUE testing center or as an online proctored exam.
This certification focuses on AI, ML, and generative AI concepts, along with AWS services that support AI-driven business use cases. Unlike advanced AWS certifications, it does not require deep hands-on engineering experience. Instead, it validates whether a candidate understands the practical application of AI and ML in AWS environments.
AWS AI Practitioner Certification Validity
The AWS Certified AI Practitioner certification is valid for three years from the date it is earned. After this period, the certification expires unless the candidate completes the required recertification process before the expiration date.
AWS certifications are time-bound because AWS services, cloud best practices, security standards, and AI/ML technologies evolve continuously. Recertification ensures that certified professionals continue to demonstrate current knowledge rather than relying on outdated exam content.
Why Does AWS Certification Expire?
AWS requires certification holders to recertify every three years to maintain active certification status. This process helps confirm that certified professionals are still aligned with the latest AWS services, recommended practices, and technology updates. AWS sends reminders before certification expiration, but the responsibility to keep the certification active remains with the candidate.
For AI-related certifications, this is especially important because generative AI, foundation models, responsible AI, security, data privacy, and AI governance are evolving quickly. A credential earned today may need to be refreshed later to reflect new AWS capabilities and industry expectations.
AWS AI Practitioner Renewal Policy
To renew the AWS Certified AI Practitioner certification, candidates must recertify before the certification expires. AWS provides two main recertification options for this credential:
Renewal Option What You Need to Do
Option 1 Pass the latest version of the AWS Certified AI Practitioner exam
Option 2 Pass the latest version of the AWS Certified Machine Learning Engineer - Associate exam
Passing the AWS Certified Machine Learning Engineer - Associate exam automatically recertifies the AWS Certified AI Practitioner certification. AWS also states that these recertification options can be taken using the 50% discount voucher available in the candidate’s AWS Certification Account.
Can You Renew an Expired AWS AI Practitioner Certification?
AWS states that to be eligible for recertification, the existing certification must be active. Expired certifications are not eligible for recertification.
This means candidates should not wait until the last moment. Once the certification expires, the candidate may need to pass the current exam again to earn the credential, but it is no longer treated as a normal renewal of an active certification.
AWS AI Practitioner Retake Policy
If a candidate fails the AWS Certified AI Practitioner exam, they must wait 14 calendar days before they are eligible to retake the exam. AWS does not place a limit on the number of exam attempts. However, candidates must pay the full registration fee for each attempt.
This gives candidates multiple opportunities to pass, but every failed attempt adds cost and delays. A smarter approach is to review the score report, identify weak domains, complete targeted preparation, and then schedule the next attempt.
Can You Retake the Exam After Passing?
Once a candidate passes an AWS Certification exam, they cannot retake the same exam for two years. However, if AWS releases an updated version of the exam with a new exam guide and exam series code, the candidate may be eligible to take the new exam version.
This rule prevents unnecessary retakes after certification has already been earned. For most candidates, the right next step after passing AWS Certified AI Practitioner is either to maintain the credential until renewal or move toward a higher-level AWS certification.
AWS AI Practitioner Passing Score
AWS uses scaled scoring. For Foundational-level AWS exams, the passing standard is represented by a scaled score of 700. This does not mean candidates simply need 70% of questions correct. Scaled scoring helps AWS maintain fairness across different versions of the exam.
Candidates should focus on understanding the concepts rather than trying to calculate the exact number of correct answers required. The exam is designed to validate practical understanding of AI, ML, generative AI, and AWS AI services at a foundational level.
What Happens If You Miss the Exam?
If a candidate misses a scheduled AWS Certification exam appointment, the exam fee is forfeited and the candidate is not eligible for a refund, except in specific cases such as approved medical exceptions. AWS also states that missing an appointment does not count as a failed attempt, but the candidate cannot register again until 24 hours after the missed exam time.
Candidates can cancel or reschedule an exam up to 24 hours before the scheduled appointment. Once the 24-hour window begins, cancellation or rescheduling is no longer available.
Best Strategy for Renewal and Retake
Candidates should track the certification expiry date from the day they pass the exam. A practical renewal strategy is to start preparing at least three to six months before the expiration date. This gives enough time to review new AWS AI services, practice exam-style questions, and schedule the exam without pressure.
For retakes, candidates should avoid booking the next attempt immediately after failure unless they were very close to passing and already understand their weak areas. Since AWS requires a 14-day waiting period after a failed attempt, that time should be used for structured revision.
