DOOM: The Dark Ages is the best shooter I have played this year and the game explains almost nothing about its best mechanics. Here is what I figured out after three campaign playthroughs and way too many hours in Slayer Gates.

The Shield Saw is the best weapon in the game and most people use it wrong

The Shield Saw is introduced as a parry tool and most players treat it as a panic block button. That is a waste. The parry window is about 12 frames at 60 FPS — roughly 200 milliseconds. Every enemy attack has a white glint about 6 frames before the hit lands. React to the glint, not the attack animation, and you will parry consistently.

The shield throw homes in on targets but the tracking is much stronger with lock-on. Without lock-on, it seeks the nearest enemy with mild tracking. With lock-on, it curves around corners. I have thrown the shield at a locked Mancubus, watched it bounce off two walls and a pillar, and still hit the Mancubus in the back of the head.

The parry-into-Super-Shotgun combo is the highest damage combo in the game. Parry any enemy for a stagger that applies a 2x damage multiplier, swap to Super Shotgun, point-blank headshot. The Atlan Mech and Mecha Dragon have deeper combat than they get credit for

The Atlan Mech appears in Mission 4 and you spend about 30% of the game inside it. It has four weapon systems and most players only use the minigun. The minigun has a heat meter sweet spot — stop firing at 95% heat instead of letting it overheat and the cooldown is 2 seconds instead of 5. That alone doubles your sustained damage output.

The Mecha Dragon in Mission 9 is the most spectacular setpiece in the game. The Dragon Missiles lock up to 8 targets simultaneously. Lock multiple turrets before releasing to clear an entire defense line in one salvo. Weapon quickswapping is a 43-frame reload cancel

The Super Shotgun reload animation is 55 frames. The weapon swap animation is 6 frames. Double-tap weapon swap to bypass reload: fire both barrels, swap to any other weapon, swap back, fire immediately. You save 0.72 seconds per cycle. Over a boss fight where you fire the SSG 40 times, this saves nearly 30 seconds. This is the single most important speedrun technique.

The optimal upgrade order is not what the game suggests. Max ammo capacity first (Sentinel Crystals), then Super Shotgun tree to max (Weapon Points). The difficulty sliders are the best accessibility feature in any shooter

DOOM: TDA replaces the traditional Easy/Normal/Hard/Nightmare selector with four independent sliders: Enemy Aggression, Enemy Health, Damage Taken, and Resource Availability. They are not cosmetic. Aggression 10 versus Aggression 0 is the difference between enemies attacking every 1.5 seconds versus every 8 seconds. You can tune exactly the experience you want, and achievements are not affected by slider settings.
