R.E.P.O. does not care about your feelings. It is a physics-based co-op extraction horror game by Semiwork where you play as a Semibot — a wobbly robot sent into monster-infested facilities to grab loot and get out. You have a shopping cart. You have gravity guns. You have three friends who will absolutely knock you off a ledge by accident.
I picked it up three weeks ago and proceeded to die 47 times across my first 20 hours. Most of those deaths were avoidable. Here is what I learned.
The monster AI is predictable once you know the patterns
There are 12 monster types and each one has a specific behavior loop. Once you learn them, you stop dying:
- The Lurker is completely blind. It tracks by sound. Crouch-walk and it walks right past you. Run and it locks onto your position instantly.
- The Charger telegraphs its attack with a 1.5-second windup animation and a distinct audio cue. Sidestep, do not backpedal — the charge hitbox extends behind the Charger.
- The Stalker targets the noisiest player on the team. If someone is sprinting or throwing objects, the Stalker ignores everyone else. Use this to kite it while your teammates loot.
- The Screamer does not do damage. It just makes noise. But that noise attracts every other monster on the map. Kill it first or avoid it entirely.
I wrote up all 12 monster tactics with counter-play for each at repogameguide.com. The full guide has attack patterns, aggro mechanics, and which weapons work best against each type.
The Service Station upgrade order matters more than your loadout
The biggest mistake I made early: buying weapons before utility upgrades. The optimal order is:
- Carry Capacity — more loot per run means faster credit accumulation. This pays for itself in 3 extractions.
- Sprint Duration — escaping monsters is more important than fighting them. Dead Semibots earn zero credits.
- Scanner Range — seeing valuables through walls doubles your haul efficiency.
- Health — only after the first three are maxed.
Weapons come last. A gravity gun is fun but it does not help when you cannot carry the loot you find.
Solo play is brutal but doable
The game is designed for 2-4 players. Solo means no revives, no distraction splitting, and no one to carry the heavy stuff while you fight. But it is possible:
- Prioritize light, high-value items (jewelry, data drives) over heavy furniture
- Use stealth for every monster encounter — fighting solo is a last resort
- The gravity gun becomes essential for moving heavy objects without sacrificing sprint
- Extract early if the monster spawn RNG is bad. A partial haul is better than zero
I have a full solo survival build guide on the site.
Physics is your best weapon and your worst enemy
This is the part that makes R.E.P.O. different from every other extraction game. Objects have real physics. A shopping cart full of loot has momentum. If your teammate bumps into it at the top of a ramp, everything spills. If a monster charges through a shelf, debris blocks doorways.
Use it: stack furniture to block monster pathing, throw objects to create noise distractions, use door physics to trap Chargers in rooms.
I am still learning this game and probably have another 47 deaths ahead of me. If you are also suffering through it, the guides are at repogameguide.com — monster tactics, upgrade priority, solo builds, and full map walkthroughs.
