At ADIPEC in Abu Dhabi on November 2, ADNOC signed a multi-year partnership with OpenAI and G42, becoming the first energy company to deploy OpenAI Frontier, a platform for connecting and coordinating frontier AI agents across complex business operations. The platform runs on OpenAI GPT models, with the inference infrastructure based in the UAE, so processing of operational data stays in the country where the assets sit. In practical terms, Frontier works as an orchestration layer: instead of isolated assistants answering one prompt at a time, specialized agents are connected, assigned tasks and coordinated as one system with a shared picture of the business.

Two initial applications are announced. The first is field master planning, where reasoning models integrate decades of data across thousands of wells, stacked reservoirs and hundreds of facilities, with preparation expected to drop from months to hours. The second is in-ground barrel valuation, where interconnected agents continuously forecast crude supply, demand, prices and margins across production, refining, logistics and trading. Rather than running these as separate pilots, both applications sit on the same agent infrastructure, which is the core idea of a platform approach.

Frontier does not replace what ADNOC already runs. It complements the company's existing ENERGYai subsurface AI and a fleet of more than 200 AI applications in daily use, positioning the new platform as the coordination layer above them. Human experts retain oversight of consequential decisions: agents prepare analysis and options, and people approve what moves forward.

The agreement was one of four Abu Dhabi–OpenAI agreements signed on November 2. The other agreements cover the world's first AI-native Machine-Readable Government initiative with the Abu Dhabi Government, a partnership between Mubadala, Inception42 and OpenAI to apply AI in investment analysis, and a five-year agreement between Inception42 and OpenAI covering government, enterprise and education adoption of AI in the emirate. Worth noting for planning: the parties did not disclose the value or rollout timeline of the ADNOC deal, and the speed figures above are company expectations for a deployment that is only starting, not published benchmarks.

Key figures

IMPACT for practitioners. This is a reference pattern for multi-agent orchestration in a heavy-asset enterprise: one coordination platform on top, specialized agents underneath, decades of legacy data as the fuel, and human-in-the-loop control over consequential decisions. Two benchmarks stand out for your own agent programs. First, the target of cutting field master planning preparation from months to hours shows what reasoning models are expected to deliver when they are pointed at a complete data estate instead of a single report. Second, 200+ existing AI applications were brought under one orchestration layer rather than replaced, which is the cheaper path for any company already running a portfolio of AI tools in production. If your teams operate several assistants in parallel today, the ADNOC move suggests the next step is not another model but a coordination layer that connects the tools you already have, tracks their work and keeps people in command of what actually gets executed.
