What happened: AI agents are now part of daily operations at the SETI Institute's Allen Telescope Array in Northern California. The stack, built by the SETI Institute and Breakthrough Listen on NVIDIA's Holoscan platform, lets software agents steer the instrument, correct incoming data and run analysis models on the live stream โ all triggered by a single natural-language request. Researchers still type the commands themselves for now. The array's 42 dishes have searched for technosignatures for years, and the agentic layer now automates much of that loop.
How it works: Holoscan processes telescope data next to the instrument rather than storing it for later analysis. DAQIRI, a Holoscan library, pulls sensor streams directly into GPU memory, CyberEther, a signal-processing framework developed at the SETI Institute, runs the math on CUDA-X libraries, and Nexus, a web-based orchestrator, gives agents a shared view of instrument state and pipelines. According to NVIDIA, the system handles up to 2.4 terabits per second on RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell GPUs, with inference running on premises.
The speed shows in results: the team reports that signal-analysis work that used to take weeks now finishes in hours. An early milestone points to the system's precision โ the pipeline achieved the first real-time AI detection of the pulsar in the Crab Nebula, a fast-spinning stellar remnant whose regular pulses make it a standard test case for signal detection. Astronomers use such known, periodic sources to verify that a detection pipeline is working correctly.
Next steps: the team plans to test open-source models that run locally on edge hardware, and names a long-term goal of sensors on the far side of the Moon, where a radio telescope would be shielded from Earth's interference. The project extends earlier SETI and NVIDIA work on AI detection of fast radio bursts, a system the SETI Institute reported as running roughly 600 times faster than prior pipelines.
IMPACT: the story is architectural more than astronomical. Agents operating a physical instrument end to end โ pointing dishes, calibrating, filtering terabit-scale streams in real time โ form a working reference for edge inference in science at large, from observatories to environmental sensors. And a sober note on expectations: the confirmed detection so far is a known pulsar, with no extraterrestrial signal claimed.
