Fine-tuned 4B model beats frontier on narrow task (vendor-reported)

Palantir's Q3 business update on November 2 included a striking case, retold by Crypto Briefing: a compact open model, Nemotron 3 Nano 4B, fine-tuned inside Foundry on more than 100,000 labeled RFI records from construction firm McCarthy, reportedly reached roughly 73 percent accuracy at about $0.10 per million tokens. Every figure here is vendor-reported, taken from Palantir slides, and no independent benchmark exists yet.

Beating the frontier at 1/200 of the price

On that classification task, the slides place the small model ahead of frontier models GPT-6 Astra and Claude Sonnet 5.5 at roughly 1/40 to 1/200 of the cost. The pattern is familiar from the distillation literature โ€” on a narrow, well-defined task with abundant domain-specific labels, a small tuned model can match or beat general-purpose giants that must reason from scratch. The catch is the source: the comparison comes from the vendor's own deck and has not been validated outside Palantir's pipeline.

McCarthy expects the approach to save about 30,000 hours of drafting work per year. A second case came from Tampa General Hospital, where fine-tuning Nemotron to hospital privacy and risk standards reportedly cut AI latency by 22 times.

There is a technical logic behind the pitch. Classification over fixed, well-labeled categories rewards fit more than breadth, and a 4B model tuned on the exact label distribution of one company's documents can converge on that mapping with far less compute per query. Latency drops too, which matters when RFI responses run in bulk. None of this contradicts frontier models being stronger on open-ended reasoning โ€” the vendor's claim is about the narrow lane only.

Sovereign AI as the sales pitch

Palantir frames these deployments as sovereign AI โ€” customers, including defense contractor L3Harris, fine-tune open models on their own data inside their own perimeter rather than sending workloads to external frontier APIs. That speaks directly to enterprises with strict data controls and turns model selection into an infrastructure decision rather than a subscription choice.

Key figures

IMPACT: If the vendor-reported numbers hold up under independent testing, the economics of narrow enterprise AI tilt hard toward small fine-tuned models over frontier APIs. Until then, treat every figure as marketing โ€” but the workflow of your data, your model, your perimeter is already a mainstream sales motion.
