This is just a quick post to throw up the books I quoted from and a link to the data for anyone who attended my presentation at Utah JS Conference 2016 today. I am putting down my thoughts in a long form post which should hopefully be up in the next couple days.
So with no further ado⦠here is the anonymized data from the survey. The long form will talk more about the methods I used to evaluate the information and what all the colors, and numbers in there mean. For now... enjoy.
The books that I mentioned, which are mostly about the development of craft and work ethic, are:
Shop Class as Soulcraft: An Inquiry Into the Value of Work by Matthew Crawford
Why We Make Things and Why It Matters: The Education of a Craftsman by Peter Korn
Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson
Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking by Malcom Gladwell
One that I didnβt mention that forms a nice trilogy with Why We Make Things and Shop Class as Soulcraft, is Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry Into Values by Robert M. Pirsig.
These are not programming books... but they will help you be a better programmer.
If you came to my talk today, Thanks! You are awesome! If not... Iβll have video from it and a long form write up of my thoughts soon. I promise.
Oh yeah: the slides are here!
