I would definitely suggest obtaining a degree, if your goal is becoming a data scientist, because it could save your time, money on courses, and help find new friends and other useful connections. Even as a software engineer, thanks to my university, I can solve some tasks faster, and easier because I had great statistics, and match courses. Yeah, you also will have to study not relevant subjects, but you can spend less focus or outsource tasks to other students. However, you could find them interesting too, so I don't see a real problem with studying something interesting for you.
