Brains, brains, BRAINS!!!
Anyone want to mentor a little idiot? Cause I'd be a mentee in a heart beat. Low-commitment, point and I go just like a truffle pig. Still gaining my legs, but open to any assistance in gaining ground on this wild west of a web.
Could be half-way around the world. Could be whole way, even. If you're a beginner like me, but even half-a-step ahead I'd never know. Just lay some breadcrumbs and give me something to figure out.
Or we could both be idiots together! Learn new things by process of blund(ering)-(e)limination. Get really good at hitting walls, getting up, and doing it all over again.
Let me know, cause I'm looking for a co-pilot! Let's do this thing!
Haha, loving the Halloween spirit! 🧟♂️
Also, just loving the humor throughout your messages here! Best of luck in finding a good mentor to work alongside. One group I recommend checking out is Virtual Coffee... they're an awesome, supportive group that has regular meetups.
Highly, highly recommend them!
Virtual Coffee
Thank you, thank you Michael! I figured I would save my serious points for serious times. And otherwise live life blissfully one footfall away from the edge of the cliff. Like The Fool card, only sub the little doggy for a ferret.
I've got them followed now, and I'll give a check. See you 'round the bend =D!
The Fool is considered one of the most powerful cards. Adventure, new beginnings, change...
Hey! I'll take the compliment, old chap! Hahahaha!
Thanks!
hi
How you doin'? Hahahah! Yamil, you wanna pair up and make spaghetti?
Sure, why not
Tell me where and when. Something on Git? We could make a language together. Keep it simple? Guy on here was tossing the idea around. I really want to make some kind of high-level micro-language (kind of like the Toki Pona of javascript or something). Unless you've got a solid idea kicking around?
Even if it's a vague idea, we could give it a go. There's also a git-game jam coming up.
Toki Pona ❤️
I would totally be on board for this if only I had more time :/
I feel this so hard. Wouldn't that be something though? Hahaha!
<3!!!
Hello. Welcome. How are you doing?
Hey Anita~
*Big wavies! Halloween is almost here. I used to know a guy who said it was Halloween 365. I also used to know a guy who wished it was Halloween 365 (he acted in a haunted house). I wish I had some big ritual I performed, but I haven't in years. And I watch scary movies for just about every flick I turn on. So what is a girl to do =P?
How about you, sis?
As someone who has been in this industry for half a decade (which, admittedly, isn't that long either):
I still feel like an idiot, I am just better at explaining why my code is bad 😅
Welcome! I get you even thought I am a hobby coder and I been coding for a much shorter time than you. I believe we all can feel like that at times when it comes to pretty much anything though. The key is to not pay much attention to that feeling when it surfaces. Some feelings are just that, feelings. They come and they go.
Yes, definitely! And it's important to remember that making mistakes is part of the process. No dev is perfect, and we all will write code that isn't pretty
You are absolutely correct. Well said!
This is <3
Hey, don't knock it =P! I've heard a lot of folks get burnt out ~10 years. So if you're still feeling relatively good about it - you've probably got sticking power. I think some of that comes from allowing yourself to be an idiot. Cause your ego isn't on the line, so you can fail and get up with less bruises. But I might also just be ignorant about things and be dating a skater. Whutevuh!
I am more than likely butchering the bean-bits out of this but I look back to it all the time. I remember Kurosawa commenting about how he knew so little. Which is so funny, as he is one of the greatest cinematographers we've ever known. But I get it, breadth wise - what do we know? We can only know what we know, and what we know in relation to what can be known is practically nothing. So it helps me sit comfy, instead of being a fidgety baby in this crazy field that I lego-smash logic together in.
Hello
Hey, hey Sujal! How you doing? I see you like ML. You might be on a more advanced level than this, but did you know you can do some free model training with Google Colab? 'Tis pretty cool.
I looked at a handful of tutorials and liked this one the most because it's the cleanest. Check it out if you're interested: colab.research.google.com/github/t...
Hello there. Welcome!
Am right here fellow idiot eager to learn ready to hit walls
KOOL! Let's do this! I was thinking about making a silly organization - like the Professional Idiots Secret Society. Hehehehe! Maybe we can piece it together and start throwing our code-poop around like monkeys =D
That be me
Hey! What kind of projects you trying to work on right now?
I can be the other idiot if you want 😁
Let's go my d-having-person! Like the script, by the by. I see you've studied Java. What are you interested in doing long term? I hear that Java pays the big bucks! I mean, I wouldn't know. But I know of it ;D!
I'm kicking it through a React course, don't wanna throw off your sail. But I was doing this "WebDev Bootcamp" docs thing for Hacktoberfest and thinking about creating a more general exploration of CompSci as a record/database. Also been kicking around making the PISS organization (Professional Idiots Secret Society). Maybe we setup PISS on GitHub, and start seeing what silly code we can sling around?
I would really like to do videogames in the future but I can help you with the WebDev Bootcamp if you want :)
I'm holding down the course pretty well on my end. I can say if you're interested you can join. But I think I'm ~55 hours in. Which is why it's a bit of a difficult starting point. We could also be accountabilabuddies, and keep ourselves motivated in our own independent studies. Create that organization (doesn't have to be PISS, but it was def on my mind =P!) to record our findings. Perhaps publish some tutorials and the likes. Something that's sort of amalgamous in form.
On the game dev scene, I planned on dipping my toes at some point. But not as a main course of action thing. They've got that GitHub/itch game jam coming up. I was thinking about fiddling around in the bitsy engine and making a micro-game. But I'm not entirely sure, because things are a bit up in the air. But totally going to flip to Godot at some point =)!
We could spitfire ideas off of one another or challenge ourselves to take a singular idea and make our own renditions. Help troubleshoot a bit if we get stuck? Not entirely sure. Usually I'm a bit more hands-on collaborative, but we may be in the middle of a move, and I don't want to promise a commitment I can't follow through with =)! Just let me know, we can work something out together~
oooh thanks, Im going to check on that, sorry for the late response, if you want you can add me in discord and we can talk there. #okami0280
Hey, I'd add you but I don't have one. Discord drives me bonkers. Don't worry about response time. It's irrelevant. Have you checked it out yet? It's pretty cool!
Hi!! My name is Srijan Baniyal . I recently completed the Hacktoberfest challenge. I noticed that Dev.to was offering me badges for Contribution . And community recognition.
Awesome stuff, Srijan!
Just a quick reminder to make sure to share a post with us before the month is up if you're hoping to score those DEV Hacktoberfest badges you mentioned.
To make sure you get the badges you're after, please just follow these steps:
Do all these things and we'll be sure to give you the right badges. 🙌
Thanks so much for participating in this year's event. By the way, you can refer to this post for full contributor completion instructions.
Thank You
For helping me out to clear the confusion Michael
No problem at all! Hope you have a wonderful weekend. 🙂
Btw , what's forem ?? Can you explain me what is this , why is this , should I use it or not ??
Forem is the platform that we built DEV on. Technically, DEV came first and then we generalized the software so that other folks could use the same platform to build their own communities.
It's also our company name! 🙂
You can learn a bit about the software Forem here... you can also see our codebase on GitHub here.
I don't know if you have plans to start a community, but we have some documentation on how you can set up Forem here on this site... surprise: it's another Forem (like DEV), haha! But honestly, we're still a relatively new platform with a small team, so if you decide to go forward with using the software to develop your own community be prepared for an experience that isn't yet totally polished. Still, I think it's great software and if you look at DEV, it's what we're using to host our community — it's fast, secure, capable of hosting many concurrent users, and respectful of data privacy. Plus, it looks pretty slick and has some great features for fostering community, enabling moderation, and publishing articles!
All in all, the choice in whether to use Forem (as in, develop your own Forem community) is up to you, but I do think it's a capable platform and we'd love to hear your opinion on it. Also, if you're interested in exploring other Forems out there, we have this website that showcases some of the different communities folks have created.
Appreciate the question and hope you continue to enjoy DEV!
Hello Srijan! Nice to have you here! 🥳
Heck yes! Sadly I missed Hacktoberfest this year as I was too busy, but I'll sure participate next year ✨
Then next year that is! Same for me as well, I mean, I only discovered Hacktoberfest in 2018 so participated that year and in 2019 and in 2020 (I believe it was) but only half my pull requests got accepted and it took such a long time until that happened that I lost that challenge. I was SO sure I made it but was mistaken. So I guess, lesson learned, do more than double the original requests just to make sure. And then I guess I have been too busy the other years after that like you, but that is okay. There will be next time! Too bad they do not give out t-shirts or stickers anymore tho, I really loved those!
Happens. You still came to know about the HacktoberFest in 2018. I came to know in 2022.
Hi I am Roselin, recently started working as a Developer and I have joined here to learn more programming concepts, and solutions for the errors I am facing in my programming.
How to reach out for solutions when I face any error or need any suggestions?
Thank you and looking forward to learning more about Coding.
I'm not sure if this place has a popping q&a section. It might though? Seems more like a low-key Medium, than a Stack Overflow. Which would be my general suggestion for assistance. But you never know. They've got some threads popping out in the beginners section. Maybe a common one can be a open-call for issues? Where people can pop what they are stuck on.
Something-something "blockers" thread. Eh, @sloan??
I got you here @jodoesgit and @rose1102! My name is Michael and I'm a Community Manager here at DEV. 👋🙂
I think Jo's description of DEV being a bit more like low-key Medium than Stack Overflow is pretty on point. We're mostly a community of casual dev bloggers, sharing ideas & resources, starting up conversations, and rooting each other on. One major focus for us is trying to foster an inclusive space for devs and tech profressionals from all backgrounds.
That said, we do technically have a tag called #help that we treat as our Q&A space. So, if you do get stuck on something and wanna ask our community, def feel free to drop it there.
Also, if you have a question that you wanna ask that's kinda sensitive or maybe you just don't wanna post it as yourself for whatever reason, we have a weekly series called Sloan's Inbox where we ask questions anonymously (through Sloan) on behalf of different community members. If you ever have a question like that, don't hesitate to share it with us via the form here and we'll be happy to ask it on your behalf via our mascot, Sloan.
Haha! Michael with the save!
I'm going to sub to the #help tag as well. Maybe I can learn something new, maybe I can help someone? Who knows. But thank you for this.
No probs Jo! Happy to help out. 🙌
Glad to be here M-dawg! 🙌
Hi there!
There's usually a few places to ask for help:
dev.to
can also work (check out the #help and #discuss tags!) but aren't focused on help. From my experience it's a good place to get opinions (like "which is your favorite web framework"), but for more specific questions it's less suited than other platforms.Hello !
i need a mentor who can guild me.
i have completed my degree in Software Engineering.
My expertise are Mobile application development (flutter) , Software testing , On page Seo.
i want to make a impact on the world just needed a spark.
a little guidance is all i want
Maybe narrow down your goals, to better figure out your next steps? I mean, I'm one to talk. But I'm just suggesting picking a path from here and walking towards it. Say app development (mobile I think you said?), or app testing (q&a positions). You might want to look at non-profit work where you tend to have less of a budget so you have to wear multiple hats. Or something having to do with a start-up that aligns with your values. Especially if you're younger and full of energy to burn.
As for mentors, I couldn't tell you. I too casted my net. I saw some site advertising for paid mentorship. Maybe just find a road map for a gig you want, as well as a couple of job ads for gigs you can agree with. If you're a fresh graduate you're desirable. Tailor your resume, actually *clean-up and tailor your resume for the job you want. Apply, even if you don't fit the bill completely. And study like a person possessed.
That's all I've got. Best of luck!
I'd be happy to help with any questions any time :) Just reply here or by direct message. You can make an impact with just a spark !
Hi everyone, I am Tu and I'm a software engineer who is enthusiastic about web and cloud services. Currently, I'm diving more into system design and am very happy to be able to gain more interesting knowledge here.
I have read many posts from the Dev Community but somehow I missed this thread for a long time xD
Hope we can connect and grow together 🤟🏻
Woot! Thanks for chiming into the welcome thread here, Tu! It's awesome to have ya with us. 🙌
Yeah, Tu! I'm following you now. I can see you're doing such good things. Keep it up!
Trying to simplify operating systems for developers and users. The first time I got a Windows computer, I tried to understand all about System32/ and Program files, and I was immediately turned off. I then adopted Linux, and although the surface was beautiful (Gnome 1 series back then) I couldn't fathom why they used three letter acronyms for all of the system folders. Well that was then. Now I've grown up and found knowledge to build my own systems.
Computing shouldn't have to be obscured by accidental complexity introduced in operating systems. I hope I can make a difference and help simplify, make elegant and contribute to developers' and user's peace of mind. Write code, every day.
Welcome to news members on DEV 🎃

Greetings, All,
I'm Michael. I'm retired Air Force and currently attending Champlain College DFS/MS. Right now I'm working on my final project in our Scripting for Digital Forensics course. I'm hoping to write a script that I've called Task Completion Notifier (TCN). I'm working on creating a script that provides both audio and visual notifications when a script being run has been completed.
I can't use anything but Python-related/supplied data, with no third-party influences. Feel free to add suggestions for this very green Python script writer. Thank you, cheers, take care, and stay safe.
Michael Noonan, USAF, Retired.

Welcome Michael!
Sounds like a cool project you're working on.
Best of luck to ya and hope you dig being part of the community!
Hey there! 👋 I'm super stoked to be part of this vibrant dev community. I'm on a journey to explore the world of web development, and I'm currently immersing myself in front-end technologies.
Fun fact: I'm a huge fan of sci-fi movies and can talk about them for hours!
Let's connect and learn together 🚀 #DevCommunity #CodingJourney"🌍✈️ #WebDevelopment
Greetings and welcome to the Dev community! Web development sounds great! I love sci-fi as well, it is a totally awesome genre! I can not understand those who do not like sci-fi as I even like to read sci-fi books.
Hi community,
I'm a newbie just happen to stumble across forum
I'd like to know the vibes of developers, what are they discussing, learning some knowledge or even careers
Recently started python, planning to study popular languages
Feel free to drop book recommendations, anyway thanks for accepting !!
Hey, Indra! Don't be afraid to share your work. Even if it feels "sloppy" or too "immature." It's kind of like when you're drawing. And you start out drawing flat shapes and sketchy lines. As you stick with it, you get better and better. Your github (which will automatically make your repositories private) can be a sign of your growth overtime. So don't be afraid to make your work public. If you think you might make it too cluttered with beginners work, you can always organize it so you keep your learning to a single/couple or repositories.
I guess it's an opinion, but I personally think it's great to see this growth. Both for self and others. Also the site tracks your work and it can be a badge of honor to see as well.
I am lazy, and I use Github Desktop. Even though I also know how to make commits through Visual Studio and the command line. But I recommend it if you want an easy way to interface between Github/your local storage.
Anything else? Python is a great language with many applications. There's a lot of demand for it, in many different fields. Likewise it's incredibly readable. Which is great, because if you're just beginning you don't have to deal with a lot of decorative syntax.
So good luck, and I am following you to see where you go from here brother!
Manu krishnan i am a react js developer and collge drop out and l love to learn javascript more ... created more than 5porjects ,portfolio -- manukrishnan.com
be happy alway 😊
Great to have you here!
i'm a college dropout too; it never stopped millions from making their dreams become real :)
College requires *utilizing a very specific set of *rituals/academic skills *as a very specific type of person with a very specific set of safety nets in place. So in turn, it's not for everyone. In fact it might be for a minority over a majority. But knowledge is power in most capacities (I think worst thing it can do is drive you mad. I've heard a link between depression and intelligence.) - but you don't need academics to gain knowledge. Especially in this day and age.
I am glad you're finding your way one way or another sister. I'm right there with you. Let's get our slice of the pie together :)!
Heyyy everyone, welcomee guys!
I promisse, dev is really coooll 🤟🏻

How're you doing Jonathan?
Friday feels too but I’m having them every! Maybe it’s the JavaScript giving me a false sense of security. What ever it is, I’ll take it!!

Hello world, I'm quite new to the programming and always shy about posting anything. Even this simple welcome thread is an internal challenge to click submit, but here I am very motivated to become an excellent programmer as my goal is to create a website from scratch for talented people who are unsure about their skills and talents. I'm currently looking for a level entry job or internship since I've been learning for 1 year now and I might be ready to work and earn money again.
I wish all the best to all the rookies like me and greetings to the experienced programmers whose help we are going to need.
elopers, developers, developers, developers
actually i've been learning deeply since this year but i lost interest in everything along the journey, i'm finding it hard to build anything, i'm looking forward to be a full stack javascript developer(MERN) i've design somethings with html, css and learnt a lot of concept in javascript, but i'm really struggling building a to-do app, so i decided to sign up on this blogging app and keep writing everything i learn and experiment with it, i've been told writing improve one skills and gives more experience besides it makes employer more interested in giving a job, wish me luck as i embark on this journey of writing bout what i learn and what spark my interest,

Hello and very warm greetings to all from Accra, Ghana. Pleased to be here with all of you
Great to have you with us Yaw! Welcome to DEV. What brings ya here? Are you into any specific dev languages or topics?
Hey everyone! I'm Zach. I love building software, especially software to make my life easier as a 1) developer and 2) business owner.
Passionate about learning, building, and sharing the process of both.
Hello,
I am facing one issue with the automation testing script. Basically, I am working on Microsoft CRM and F&O.
What happens in CRM when new deploying is done, the locator of the exiting element is changed, and due to that automation script fails. So, does anyone have any idea how to solve this issue?
Olaaa everyone!
I'm Luzie (you can call me Zie) who have strong passion for digital transformation, IT consulting, and software development.
Fun fact: I'm quite shy and introverted at first but once we have topics in common it's gonna trigger me to turn out to be super duper friendly and sociable.
I'd love to connect with y'all and have further discussions about being part of the community. Cheers!!
Hello! Beginner dev looking to learn!! Currently in Flatiron School looking to take on projects that I can learn the most from and would make the most impact during tech interviews.
Whether you're across the world, starting yourself, getting stuck, or looking to haze me with new terminology I'll undoubtedly have to scratch my head against and google about, SHOW ME WHAT THERE IS TO LEARN.
I'm also using datacamp for data science with python, learning express JS, and starting with google maps api to get a feel for maps. What other things do you all recommend I look at as well?
Hello everyone, I'm Per, I study Cognitive Science and will soon start studying applied informatics. I love to deal with web development a lot, create Websites as a Freelancer and write posts about this topic as well, I hope you enjoy them! Looking forward to learning a lot here on dev.to!
Apart from that: good food, metal music, powerlifting, thats what makes me happy :D
Hello everyone! I'm Bruno and a former Biology Teacher that someday realized that wanted to work as software developer. I've been working mainly with Java since and having a great time. Hope to find some insight as well as share mines, learn new things and, if possible, make friends along the way.
Hello people, happy Tue and Halloween 🎃 for those of you who celebrate it
I'm Alessio from Italy. I'm a data scientist turned into a Growth Product leader. I've spent most of my career working in early stage YC startups and open source companies.
Happy to give-and-take from this community around open source and ai content 👋
Hi Dev!
Let's connect?
My name is Tulio and I'm studying programming, basically HTML, CSS and Javascript. I have experience with design, marketing and e-commerce .
I'm very excited, I'm currently creating my portfolio ;)
Hi everyone! ✨
I've worked as a DevOps engineer for the last 5 years, and did some software development before that. Occasionally I also care for database servers when they're feeling down again (we all need someone to care for us from time to time, even servers!)
In my free time I've picked up game development using the open source Godot Engine! So far I only published small jam games, but who knows? Maybe I will publish something a bit bigger soon 👀
Hello All,
I am an older Software Engineer who has spent most of his years as a backend developer. I am now finally learning front end. I hope to be posting some of the React JS or front end code here.
Also, I work remotely and would love to make connections with many of you.
Cheers!
Hi, I'm Jacob. My background is in finance (in investment research), but I'm interested in data and software development. Most of my programming experience is data-flavored, so I'm comfortable working with Python and SQL, but I've been trying to step outside my comfort zone with some front-end web dev.
My current project is bridging the gap between my Python experience and my interest in web dev: I'm building the backend for a blog in using Python's Flask (first time working on building a CRUD app!). I hope to build this basic project into a larger app based around improving investment portfolio visualization. There are so few OSS or even affordable solutions for out-of-the-box, scalable visualization of investment portfolios.
Feel free to reach out! I love learning and always love suggestions of libraries to check out or someone to connect with further!

Hi All, This is Saurabh. I am glad to join this community to expand my knowledge around the new tech stack. I am specialised in Adobe Experience Manager(AEM). Looking forward to add my unicorn findings and help others to get through their tech problems.
Hello, I am back! I left due to my struggle with the infamous "imposter syndrome". I have chosen the difficult path of becoming a software developer. I feel better now even though I am not quite there yet. I have decided that some feelings are just feelings, to let those be and keep coding making every day a win ✨
Hey!! My name is Divjot. I recently completed the Hacktoberfest challenge. I received an email that Dev.to was offering me badges for Contribution and community recognition. But I am quite confused about how to claim those badges.
Hello, guys! :)
The backend engineer is here :D
