Ever since I read Jakob Nielsen’s Designing Web Usability, I’ve tried to mix usability with creativity.
I used to focus mostly on making interfaces look good, playing with JavaScript and graphics. But over time, I realized good UI isn’t just about looks, it’s about how naturally it works.
The super-detailed, flashy stuff feels more at home in video games and movies.
One small rule I like: no “Home” on the homepage. The logo doesn’t need to link to itself either. You’re already there.
On other pages, though, the logo goes back home and Home stays in the navigation.
It’s not a universal rule or a best practice, just a small thing that became part of my style. I’m definitely not claiming I invented it.
And it won’t work everywhere. With complex navigation or lots of links, context matters more than the rule.
I like these little details where creativity actually makes an interface more intuitive and concise, rather than getting in the way.
