Why the declared serving is a marketing choice
Regulators set reference amounts loosely, and within those rules the declared serving is picked by the people selling the product. A smaller serving makes every number on the panel smaller: fewer calories, less sugar, less sodium, all technically true. Serving declarations also shape perception; studies of front-of-pack labelling find that consumers routinely misread per-serving values as per-package or per-bowl values, and underestimate what they eat as a result. The label is not lying. It is answering a question you did not ask.

Notice what the trick does across a week. If your actual cereal bowl is double the declared serving, breakfast is quietly 160 kcal per day bigger than your food diary says, over 1,100 kcal per week from one food. Per-100g thinking defeats the trick
The per-100g column cannot be gamed by shrinking the serving, which is why EU labels are required to show it and why every Dietly food page leads with it. Two habits make it automatic:
Compare products only per 100 g. A "90 kcal per serving" snack and a "160 kcal per serving" snack may be the same food with different serving declarations. Put them side by side in the comparison tool and the illusion disappears.
Calibrate your bowls once. Weigh your normal pour of cereal, your usual spoon of peanut butter, your evening scoop of ice cream. One session with a kitchen scale turns every future guess into a measurement. You do not need to weigh forever; you need to know what your hand does.
Where portion sizes genuinely help is the other direction: pre-portioned single packs remove the decision entirely, and for foods you tend to overpour, buying the smaller format is a better strategy than relying on restraint at 9 pm.
