NadirClaw vs LiteLLM vs ClawRouter: Which LLM Router Should You Use?

You're probably here because your LLM bill is too high. Three open-source tools claim to solve this, each taking a completely different approach. Here's what they actually do.
The Quick Version

NadirClaw: Automatic Classification
NadirClaw uses a lightweight DistilBERT classifier to predict whether a prompt needs a premium model or a cheap one. Classification happens in ~10ms on your machine.
What it does:
- Analyzes prompt text with sentence embeddings
- Routes simple requests to cheap models (Gemini Flash, Haiku, GPT-4o-mini)
- Routes complex requests to premium models (Claude Opus, GPT-5.2, Gemini Pro)
- Detects agentic workflows and forces them to premium tier
- Detects reasoning tasks and routes to reasoning-optimized models
- Works as an OpenAI-compatible proxy on localhost:8856

When to use it:
You want automatic routing without thinking about rules. You trust an ML classifier to make the call. You want zero external dependencies.
When not to use it:
You need centralized management across teams. You want explicit control over every routing decision. You need enterprise features like SSO or audit logs.
ClawRouter: Agent-Native Routing with Crypto Payments
ClawRouter is built for OpenClaw users and routes via a 15-dimension weighted scoring system. Payment happens via the x402 protocol, non-custodial USDC on Base L2.
What it does:
- Evaluates prompts with a local scoring algorithm (SIMPLE/MEDIUM/COMPLEX/REASONING tiers)
- Routes to BlockRun's API, which handles the actual LLM calls
- Auto-generates a crypto wallet on install (~/.openclaw/blockrun/wallet.key)
- You fund the wallet with USDC, pay per request via signed transactions
- No API keys, no account signup, payment IS authentication

When to use it:
You're already using OpenClaw. You want zero-friction payment without API key management. You're comfortable with crypto wallets. You like the idea of non-custodial, pay-per-request billing.
When not to use it:
You don't want to manage a crypto wallet. You prefer traditional API keys. You want to route directly to your own provider accounts. You need to control exactly which models get hit.
LiteLLM: Enterprise API Gateway
LiteLLM is not a smart router. It's a unified API gateway that abstracts 100+ LLM providers behind a single OpenAI-compatible interface. Routing is manual: you write config files.
What it does:
- Translates requests to provider-specific formats (Azure, Bedrock, Vertex AI, etc.)
- Manages authentication, rate limits, load balancing across deployments
- Provides observability (logging to Langfuse, MLflow, etc.)
- Offers enterprise features: SSO, spend tracking per team/project, admin dashboard
- Supports fallback chains (if model A fails, try model B)

There's no automatic classification. You decide which model to call by passing model: "gpt-4" in your request.
Cost model:
Self-hosted: free (open source). Hosted version: starts at $49/month. Enterprise tier: custom pricing with SLA and priority support (~$3,665-$4,500/month TCO according to their docs).
When to use it:
You're a platform team managing LLM access for multiple projects. You need centralized cost tracking and budget enforcement. You want retry/fallback logic across Azure/OpenAI/Bedrock. You need compliance features (SSO, audit logs).
When not to use it:
You're a solo developer who just wants to save money. You don't need multi-tenant management. You want automatic routing without writing config.

When to Choose What
Choose NadirClaw if:
- You want the router to make routing decisions automatically
- You trust ML classification over hand-written rules

Choose ClawRouter if:
- You're already using OpenClaw
- You prefer crypto payments over API key juggling

Choose LiteLLM if:

Can You Use Them Together?
Yes, but it gets weird.
- NadirClaw + LiteLLM: NadirClaw already uses LiteLLM internally for non-Gemini providers, so this is redundant unless you need LiteLLM's enterprise features on top.
- NadirClaw + ClawRouter: Doesn't make sense. Both are routers. Pick one.
- ClawRouter + LiteLLM: ClawRouter calls BlockRun's API, which is a third-party service. If you're using LiteLLM, you probably want direct provider access, not a middleman.
The Real Difference
These tools solve different problems:
- NadirClaw asks: "Can we predict which model a prompt needs?"
- ClawRouter asks: "Can we simplify LLM payments with crypto?"
- LiteLLM asks: "Can we give platform teams a single interface to every LLM provider?"
They're not competitors. They're different tools for different jobs.
If you're a solo developer trying to cut your Claude bill, NadirClaw is probably what you want. If you're running a platform team managing 50 engineers across 10 projects, LiteLLM makes sense. If you're deep in the OpenClaw ecosystem and you like crypto payments, ClawRouter fits.
