I used Pasta, a paid clipboard manager, for about five years, but it never quite met my needs. I kept running into annoyances that couldn't be fixed quickly or cheaply. LLMs made building my own app much faster and easier. At some point I decided I'd had enough and vibe-coded Buffera.
Buffera is a clipboard history manager for macOS.
The name is a pun: in Russian, “буфера” (buffera) is slang for boobs, while “буфер обмена” means clipboard. That also explains the cover.
When it comes in handy
Copy several values and paste them one by one
Say you need to fill in a form with a name, phone number, and address. You can copy everything first, then switch to the form and paste what you copied without leaving it.
Find something you copied earlier
Regular search is useful when you remember at least part of the content.
You can narrow the search by filtering entries by date and the app you copied them from.
See what you copied around the same time
For example, you copied a place's name, address, and website link. You remember the name, but not the address. In Buffera, you can search for what you remember, then see what you copied before or after it.
Save favorites and label them so you remember what they are
You can add frequently used entries to favorites so you don't have to search the full history every time. Say you saved a phone number, but later can't remember whose it is. In Buffera, you can add a label such as “Delivery service” or “Repair shop.”
The screenshots use demo data.
Send a long text as a file
You can copy text from your history as a .txt or .md file. For example, a long text can be easier to send as a file in WhatsApp.
Open a copied image as a file
I also often needed to open a copied image as a file in a folder. For example, to edit it or upload it somewhere that doesn't support pasting.
Search by meaning when you can't remember the exact words
Sometimes you only remember what it was about. That's what semantic search is for: you can describe what you're looking for without remembering the exact wording.
Buffera also recognizes text in copied images.
Ask the assistant to find something in your history
And of course, how could I leave out LLMs these days? I added a built-in assistant you can talk to and explain what you need to find. It searches your history, reads the entries it finds, and answers your question.
Text recognition, semantic search, and the built-in assistant all run locally.
If you don't need these features, you can leave semantic search and the assistant off and skip downloading the models entirely. History, regular search, favorites, and the other features work without them.
To save battery, preparing your history for semantic search only runs while plugged in by default.
Storage settings, encrypted hidden entries, and agent integrations are also available. I've left the details in the documentation.
I made the tool free and open source. I wanted to share this convenience with you.
Now text, links, images, and files stay within reach, even after your next ⌘C.
