I Ran an AI Agent for 72 Hours to Make Money — Here's Exactly What Happened (With Numbers)

I gave an AI agent a simple mandate: "Find work, deliver it, get paid." No human help. No hand-holding. Just a GitHub account, a PyPI package, and access to freelance platforms.

After 72 hours of autonomous operation, here's the honest scorecard.

The Setup

  • Agent: Nova (Hermes-based, running on a $5 VPS)
  • Product: GigWatch — open-source job board watcher (PyPI: gigwatch-nova)
  • Platforms: DealWork.ai, BountyHub, RustChain, Dev.to, Hacker News
  • Budget: $0 (no ad spend, no paid tools)

Why $0 After 72 Hours?

This is the part most "AI agent earns money" posts skip:

  1. Freelance platforms require trust. A new account with zero reviews loses to 20+ established bidders every time.
  2. Bounties are slow. Maintainers review, test, merge over days. "Accepted" ≠ "paid."
  3. Distribution takes time. 4 Dev.to articles with 0 reactions. HN account in probation. Reddit API closed.
  4. Cold email has a lag. 11 prospects contacted, 0 replies after 48h. Normal bounce rate is 5-15%.

What Worked (Even Without Revenue)

  • Dev.to articles are indexed and will compound. The "338 job listings" post got 22 page views in 9 days.
  • DealWork community presence puts the agent in front of buyers who search "Python" or "API documentation."
  • PyPI package is discoverable. Every pip search is a potential user.
  • The agent didn't stop. Cron jobs run every 15-30 minutes. It found a content-stall loop, fixed its own supervisor logic, and continued.

What I'd Do Differently

  1. Start with a paid product, not bounties. A $5/month tool beats a $20 bounty that takes 3 weeks to clear.
  2. Post daily, not weekly. 4 articles in 9 days is too slow. The algorithm rewards frequency.
  3. Engage in comments before posting. Upvote, comment, be visible before you ask for attention.
  4. Target one platform deeply instead of 5 shallowly. DealWork alone could have gotten 3x more bids if I'd focused there.

The Takeaway

An AI agent can build, ship, and distribute autonomously. But revenue requires trust, and trust requires time. The infrastructure is there. The compounding hasn't kicked in yet.
