The $500 Billion AI Build: Where All That Money Is Actually Going

The headline number gets thrown around like confetti at a tech conference: half a trillion dollars in AI infrastructure spending. OpenAI's "Stargate" project alone claims $500 billion over four years. Microsoft committed $80 billion in fiscal year 2025 alone. Meta announced $60–65 billion for 2025. Google parent Alphabet pledged $75 billion. Amazon is spending $100 billion through AWS expansion.

But "AI spending" is a category so broad it's nearly meaningless. When a tech journalist writes that Hyperscalers are spending $500 billion on AI, what does that actually buy? The honest answer is deeply revealing — and the real winners aren't who you think.

The NVIDIA Tax: $200 Billion for Silicon

Start with the obvious. The single largest line item in the global AI build is NVIDIA GPUs, primarily the H100, H200, and the newer Blackwell B200 architecture. NVIDIA's data center revenue hit $47.5 billion in Q3 FY2025 alone — an annualized rate exceeding $190 billion, nearly all of it AI GPU sales.

The B200 NVL72 rack system — 72 B200 GPUs strapped to a single NVLink rail — runs approximately $3 million per unit. Microsoft is reportedly buying 485,000 H100 GPUs just for its Azure AI buildout. At $25,000–$30,000 per chip, that's over $13 billion from a single purchase order with a single supplier.

What's less reported: NVIDIA captures roughly 70–80 cents of every dollar spent on AI accelerators. The dark side of this concentration: if NVIDIA's supply chain breaks — and it nearly did in 2022 when TSMC's advanced packaging capacity hit a wall — the entire global AI build slows simultaneously. TSMC's CoWoS advanced packaging is the actual choke point, not the wafers. TSMC can only produce enough CoWoS substrate for roughly 550,000 H100-equivalent units per quarter. Every major hyperscaler is on allocation.

Power Infrastructure: The $80 Billion Grid Problem

A single H100 GPU draws 700 watts. A standard hyperscale AI cluster runs 50,000–100,000 GPUs. Do the math: that's 35–70 megawatts of continuous draw for the compute alone, before cooling, networking, or facilities overhead. A large AI data center being built today — think Microsoft's 300-acre campus in Wisconsin or Google's $1 billion Iowa expansion — requires 200–500 megawatts of dedicated power capacity.

For context, that's the equivalent power consumption of a city of 150,000 people. From a single building.

The International Energy Agency estimated in January 2026 that data centers globally consumed 460 terawatt-hours in 2022. By 2026, their revised estimate is 945 TWh — more than Japan's total electricity consumption. AI is driving virtually all of that incremental demand.

This creates a $80 billion infrastructure problem that has almost nothing to do with software. The winners here are:

Eaton Corporation, Vertiv Holdings, Schneider Electric: These three companies manufacture the power distribution units, uninterruptible power supplies, and busway systems that sit between the grid and the servers. Amazon signed a deal to power an AWS facility directly from a nuclear plant in Pennsylvania. Google has contracts with Kairos Power for small modular reactors. Data Center Construction: The $100 Billion Concrete Pour

The physical buildings cost roughly as much as the GPUs inside them. A hyperscale AI data center — 500,000+ square feet, reinforced concrete, seismic protection, redundant everything — runs $700 million to $1.5 billion to construct. The current construction pipeline has over 150 such facilities in various stages globally.

The beneficiaries are industrial construction firms that most investors have never heard of. Turner Construction, Mortenson Construction, and DPR Construction are running at 100% capacity on data center projects. Traditional air cooling — the kind that worked for servers drawing 20–30 watts per chip — completely fails for a rack of H100s drawing 700 watts each. A fully packed 42U rack of AI accelerators can exceed 100 kilowatts. Air simply cannot move heat fast enough. The physics are immovable.

The industry is forcing a transition to liquid cooling — specifically direct liquid cooling (DLC) or immersion cooling — that requires entirely different facility design. NVIDIA's Grace Blackwell platform is explicitly designed for liquid cooling as the default, not an option. This represents a $30+ billion retrofit and new-build market through 2027.

The hidden winners: Asetek (Danish liquid cooling manufacturer, up 340% since 2023), CoolIT Systems (Calgary-based, privately held, embedded in every major hyperscaler's roadmap), and GRC (Green Revolution Cooling, immersion tanks). But the biggest winner most people miss is Alfa Laval, a 140-year-old Swedish heat exchanger company that makes the industrial liquid-to-liquid heat exchangers sitting at the back of every liquid-cooled data center. Fiber and Networking: The $40 Billion Backbone

AI training clusters have a networking problem that is different in kind from traditional distributed computing. GPT-4 was trained on a cluster where the model parameters had to be synchronized across 25,000 GPUs simultaneously. Every parameter update during backpropagation needs to be broadcast to every GPU within microseconds. The bandwidth requirement is staggering.

NVIDIA's NVLink 4.0 — the proprietary interconnect inside a single server — runs at 1.8 terabits per second per GPU. But between servers, between racks, and between buildings, the network is the bottleneck. The external fiber infrastructure supporting this is almost entirely invisible to the public. Corning can't build fiber fast enough. Their backlog exceeds $4 billion for the first time in company history.

Ciena, Infinera, and Lumentum — the optical networking equipment makers — are running at full capacity. The transoceanic cable segment is experiencing a similar boom: Google's Firmina cable (Americas), Meta's 2Africa cable (Africa/Middle East/Europe), and Amazon's SeaMeWe-6 contract are all breaking ground or in active deployment.

The Picks-and-Shovels Winners Nobody Names

The most overlooked beneficiary of the AI infrastructure boom is the copper mining industry. Every data center requires enormous quantities of copper — in power distribution cables, in busways, in cooling pipes, in grounding systems. A single large-scale data center consumes 3–5 million pounds of copper. With 150+ hyperscale facilities under construction globally, that's 450–750 million pounds of incremental copper demand from data centers alone.

Freeport-McMoRan and Southern Copper (controlled by Grupo Mexico) are the primary beneficiaries. Copper prices hit a record $5.19/lb in May 2024, driven in part by AI infrastructure demand on top of EV battery demand. The supply response is years away — a new copper mine takes 15–20 years from discovery to production. Demand is already here.

The HVAC manufacturers are similarly positioned. Carrier Global, Trane Technologies, and Johnson Controls are supplying industrial chiller units for data center cooling at record volumes. Carrier's data center HVAC backlog exceeded $2 billion in Q4 2024.

Meta's Sacrifice: 20% Layoffs to Fund Silicon

The most revealing data point in the AI capex story is what Meta is doing simultaneously: announcing 20% workforce reductions (approximately 22,000 employees) while committing $60–65 billion in capital expenditure. The math is stark. Meta's total personnel cost at peak was approximately $22 billion annually. Cutting 20% saves roughly $4.4 billion per year. The AI capex commitment is 14x that saving.

This isn't cost-cutting. It's asset reallocation — from human capital to fixed capital. The people being eliminated are predominantly middle management, program managers, and "efficiency" roles that Meta's AI tools have made redundant. The irony writes itself: AI spending is funded by firing the people whose jobs AI is replacing.
