If the setting is missing, add it yourself

So I’ve been playing this video game for a while…

The game is called Everspace 2, developed and published by ROCKFISH Games. It’s an action-adventure space shooter game where you fly one of your spaceships through various star systems. It’s a great game, and I love it!

While playing the game I noticed a problem with some display elements, which left me confused sometimes. So I thought about how I could improve it.

To navigate such vast 3D spaces, the game has a “markers” system that shows points of interest on your HUD.

Visible markers

The markers are white when there are no objects or obstacles between you and the point of interest. They appear white with lower opacity when there are one or more objects in the way.

The problem is, when you have a bunch of objects on your screen, some of them might be very bright, making it hard to see the markers, especially when they have lower opacity.

Barely visible markers

So I went to the game’s settings to see if I could change the color of the markers, thinking this might solve my problem. However, the option to change the markers’ color was missing.

What I was looking for was something like this:

PyQt5 GUI

This is my smaller GUI replica of the Everspace 2 settings menu, developed in Python using PyQt5 module. I have added the option to change the color of markers under the “DISPLAY” section, as it seems convenient (also it can be added under GRAPHICS’ display section). Here, you can change the color setting and see the results on the preview icons.

I believe such accessibility settings should exist in every game’s settings, as they allow players to configure the game to be more comfortable. Additionally, they can help color-blind players too.

What is your opinion on this topic?

The code of my version of settings GUI is uploaded to my Github. Please, review and play with the code if you like:
