Preface:
This is the eighth book I've read this year.
Simon Sinek once proposed the "Golden Circle Motivation Theory" in a video, which mentions three circles that drive human action. The outer layer is "WHAT" you do, the middle is "HOW" you do it, and the center is the most important "WHY".
This book is an elaboration of the content of that video, and it's a book I recommend everyone who wants to motivate others to read.
Content Summary and Thoughts:
Simon Sinek, the 18th-ranked global management thinker by Thinkers50, pioneered the Golden Circle motivation theory 10 years ago.
His TED talk of the same name ranks in the top three most popular, attracting nearly 40 million views.
"Start With Why" has sold over a million copies worldwide and continues to top the Amazon category charts.
More and more readers are asking: "How can my team and I find our why?"
Sinek and his team have accumulated 10 years of consulting experience in various fields worldwide, developing the "why" theory into a complete action plan.
It's applicable to everyone, every team, helping everyone embark on the journey of why and unleash their maximum potential!
"People don't buy what you do; they buy why you do it."
by Simon Sinek
"Have you ever introduced your job to a stranger, and how did you describe your job?" At the beginning of this book, the author uses his own example to explain the importance of passion for work. He tries to describe his work to the person next to him on the plane. If it were you, how would you describe your job? At first, you might explain your job, and then you might share your daily work content with others. This kind of conversation is quite boring, but if you try to share your feelings and thoughts when you are working, why you want to do this job? And the meaning it brings to you, slowly you will find the "WHY" of your work, you will feel excited, feel passionate, you will think you are doing the best job in the world.
This book leads you through "Why do you need to find your why?", "How do you find your why?" and then slowly guides you on how to help yourself and your team find your why. The second half of the book focuses on how to hold a "team exploration camp," how to start, and how to guide the team's exploration in the right direction. Then you can find the strengths of the team, let the team pursue the values of a common faith, and pursue your dreams (that is, your WHY).
Thoughts:
The whole book is like an enlarged version of the eighteen-minute video, but because the focus is on how to lead the team to explore together. So there are many details of the "team exploration camp". But the idea of the whole book is quite correct, and it is also very suitable for people who do Developer Relations to take a good look at it. Because many people don't understand developer relations, they don't understand developer relations, so they can't understand the meaning of each link of the work. They always think that DevRel is organizing events, giving speeches, and building good relationships with developers. These are all correct, but just like describing from What -> How -> Why, it can't move people's hearts. Although this is a way of team exploration, it is not a way of sharing with others. The real way should be to describe each job from Why -> How -> What. This way, many people can understand the importance of daily work details.
For example, if you want to do Internal Evangelism. Then it should be through sharing and encouraging the growth of others to enable the self-growth of internal colleagues (Why), so we encourage colleagues to share. Let colleagues understand the joyful feelings and the joy of growth brought by sharing (How), and then let them grow themselves. So we hold internal reading clubs, set up workshops, and even hold external activities to let colleagues give speeches externally and write articles on the official blog (What).
Understanding other people's work from Why -> How -> What will become quite reasonable and accurate. The hard work of many times can also be understood. I also recommend that every reader read this book and find your Why in your life together.
