Preface

Due to the impact of the new coronavirus, it seems that every company has started (or is trying out) WFH (Work From Home), which is working from home, to avoid taking public transportation and increasing the risk of infection. I recently listened to a few podcasts that also mentioned the thoughts of software workers on WFH, and I think I can organize them and share them.

Several Work From Home Podcasts:

I recently listened to some podcasts discussing WFH (Work From Home), and I'll share a few with you:

Go Time – Episode #123 WFH

Content:

This article is quite interesting because it discusses many very detailed WFH details:

  • For example, drinking too much water and going to the bathroom.
  • Need to invest in a good chair (Advertisement: LINE's office is full of Human, it's too unfair)
  • Need a ritual to change your mood ~ changing clothes might be a good idea? Some people also suggest setting an alarm, otherwise it's easy to work too long.
  • Need to have a habit of walking around, basically what you would do in the office, you should also do it in WFH, this is quite important to me. I'm used to walking around to think about the details of many activities, and it's not good that I can't walk around at home. Some people suggest raising a dog ~ it will force you to walk around.

The other part actually talks about the importance of engineers' Deep Work, that is, how to reserve a period of time for focused work. I won't mention it separately here. There is a book I am reading, which I can recommend:

Remote Team Management with Ryan Chartrand : Software Engineering Daily

https://softwareengineeringdaily.com/2020/03/26/remote-team-management-with-ryan-chartrand/

The content discussed is more direct than Work From Home, but a complete Remote Team. It talks about Remote team is more direct, saving a lot of office etiquette, but it can directly give the company all the sponsorship. Employees don't need to worry about commuting to work every day, what to eat for lunch, but how to help the project or the company move forward today.

weak self podcast 23: Working from home! How to avoid WTF when WFH

https://weakself.dev/episodes/23

The content is quite similar to the previous two, if you want to listen to the Chinese version, you can listen to this one.

Thoughts on Work From Home

The company has also recently tried out WFH, with the aim of hoping that all colleagues can get used to completing their daily work through remote work. Therefore, the time arrangement is also more random, and it is also hoped that colleagues will not specifically move meetings away because of WFH.

For myself, Work From Home or working in the office is mainly about the degree of concentration, of course, the company's super good chair is also an incentive! Because the environment around me is actually quite quiet, so for me, there is not much difference whether I am at home or in the office, but I personally prefer to work in the office because the equipment is more complete.

In addition, there are some online activities that need to be recorded recently, and I often need to discuss the relevant content of the recording with the production company on the spot. So many times I actually hope to work in the office. (Plus, I don't know why the neighbor upstairs has started renovating recently orz)

However, as mentioned in several podcasts, it is very important to confirm that you are off work, to avoid your life being seriously affected by WFH.

In addition to these, how to improve concentration or how to make yourself concentrate on work, this seems to be another issue.
