The Absurdity of Gatekeeper Platforms: Why We Chose Unchained Commerce Over Traditional Options

The Problem We Were Actually Solving

We wanted to offer our customers the flexibility to pay with their preferred cryptocurrency, Bitcoin. This wasn't just about catering to a niche market; it was also about giving our users more control over their financial transactions. However, traditional platforms like Stripe and Gumroad had strict policies against accepting cryptocurrency payments, citing security and regulatory concerns.

What We Tried First (And Why It Failed)

We tried to work around the system by using third-party services that integrated with our existing payment gateways. These services would handle the Bitcoin conversion and deposit the funds into our accounts, but they came with significant fees and limited transparency.

For example, we used a service called Coinbase Commerce, which charged us a 1% fee on every transaction. This might not seem like a lot, but when you're processing thousands of transactions per month, those fees can add up quickly.

The Architecture Decision

After months of experimentation and frustration, we decided to take a different approach. We chose Unchained Commerce, a platform that allowed us to accept Bitcoin payments directly without the need for intermediaries.

Unchained Commerce uses a decentralized architecture that enables real-time payment processing and eliminates the need for conversion fees. We simply needed to integrate their API with our existing payment processor, and voila! Our customers could now pay with Bitcoin.

What The Numbers Said After

After switching to Unchained Commerce, our MRR increased by 10% due to a significant reduction in conversion fees. Our churn rate remained steady at 5%, but our activation rate improved by 15%, likely due to the increased flexibility and control our users now had over their payments.

Here are the actual numbers:

  • MRR: $133,200 (from $120,000)
  • Churn rate: 5% (unchanged)
  • Activation rate: 45% (up from 30%)
  • Conversion fees: 0.5% (down from 2.5%)

What I Would Do Differently

In hindsight, we should have done our research and due diligence on Unchained Commerce before diving in headfirst. We might have saved ourselves some time and money by exploring alternative solutions, like using a custom-built payment processing system.

However, I wouldn't change our decision to leave the traditional platforms behind. The flexibility and control we've gained by using Unchained Commerce have been invaluable, and our customers have responded positively to the change.

As a solo founder, it's easy to get caught up in the excitement of launching a product and then feeling constrained by platform limitations. But the truth is, there are often better alternatives available if you're willing to take the time to explore them.
