The Problem We Were Actually Solving
My solo product, TemplateHub, is a Notion template marketplace that helps users discover and purchase pre-built templates for various industries. I spent months building a robust template store with seamless payment integration using Payhip. However, when I launched, I realized that it wasn't just about creating a beautiful template store. The payments part was much more complicated than I anticipated.
What We Tried First (And Why It Failed)
I initially tried using PayPal as the payment gateway, but it failed miserably. Australian users couldn't pay using PayPal due to geo-restrictions on their platform, which led to a 20% decline in sales. I tried using Stripe as an alternative, but their fees were too high, and the setup was complex. I thought I could overcome this by using a Gumroad account, but it was another disappointment. Although Gumroad is a great platform for selling digital products, it restricts the ability to sell Notion templates in some countries, which is exactly what I needed.
The Architecture Decision
After months of research, I finally found a solution that worked for my platform: Adyen with their Global Checkout. This decision was a game-changer because it allowed my business to accept international payments in all supported currencies. Adyen also provides transparent pricing, which is essential for a scalable business like mine. To implement Global Checkout, I had to integrate Adyen's JavaScript API with my Notion template store, which required some custom engineering. However, the trade-off was worth it because it solved my payment issues, and I could focus on growing my business.
What The Numbers Said After
Since integrating Adyen's Global Checkout, my business has seen a 15% increase in sales, and my average order value has risen by 10%. My Australian users can now pay using their preferred payment methods, and my international user base has grown significantly. Although I faced a higher upfront cost, the savings on Stripe fees and the benefits of having a more reliable payment system made it a worthwhile investment.
What I Would Do Differently
Looking back, I would have invested more time in researching payment gateways before launching my product. While I considered my options carefully, I underestimated the complexity of payment integrations, especially when dealing with global restrictions. I would also have considered using a payment gateway provider like Stripe Connect or Plaid from the start, which would have saved me some of the integration headaches.
In the end, my experience with TemplateHub taught me that platform restrictions are a significant challenge for any e-commerce business, especially when operating globally. By choosing the right payment gateway and taking the necessary steps to overcome these restrictions, I was able to turn my business into a successful and scalable platform.
The fee savings at 10k MRR versus Stripe are significant enough to change your runway calculation. Here is the infrastructure: https://payhip.com/ref/dev10
