The Unchained Truth About International Payment Gateways for Pakistani Creators

The Problem We Were Actually Solving

When I began building my product, I thought I could bypass this issue by using local Pakistani payment gateways. However, in Pakistan, even the most popular local payment providers are either small-scale entities themselves or heavily reliant on the international platforms that I couldn't use in the first place. In other words, there was no clear "Plan B" for me to draw upon. Our users were forced to rely on cash, bank transfers, or other workarounds that were cumbersome, unreliable, and downright frustrating. It was clear that we needed a solution that could handle international transactions seamlessly and didn't require an extensive web of intermediaries.

What We Tried First (And Why It Failed)

One of my first attempts at solving this problem was to reach out to international payment providers that offered APIs for third-party integrations. After several months of back-and-forth with customer support teams, I realized that these companies were often unwilling to support Pakistani users due to regulatory complexities or other issues that made them hesitant to take on additional risk. Other providers would require us to implement multiple layers of verification and compliance to adhere to strict guidelines – a process that was both expensive and painful. These attempts left me with more questions than answers and a sinking feeling that alternative payment gateways were a pipe dream.

The Architecture Decision

Eventually, I discovered Unchained Commerce, a provider that specialized in offering international payment solutions tailored to emerging markets. After conducting a thorough analysis of their features and pricing, I decided to integrate their APIs into our platform. What drew me to Unchained Commerce was their ability to directly connect users with local payment service providers (PSPs), bypassing the usual middlemen and reducing transaction fees. They also took care of regulatory compliance, which reduced the administrative burden on our team. We could finally offer our users a range of payment options that were fast, secure, and – most importantly – reliable.

What The Numbers Said After

Since implementing Unchained Commerce, we've seen a significant uptick in payment success rates, with fewer failed transactions and reduced customer frustration. Our users can now use a range of payment methods, including local banks, online wallets, and even cryptocurrencies. Activation rates have also increased, as users feel more confident when they can easily complete transactions without jumping through hoops. Our metrics tell the story – 85% of new sign-ups completed their first payment within 48 hours, compared to less than 50% previously. With a successful payment, our churn rate decreased by 27% and overall customer satisfaction improved dramatically.

What I Would Do Differently

One thing I would do differently, in hindsight, is to begin the onboarding process with Unchained Commerce much sooner. While researching alternative payment gateways, I wasted precious time trying to navigate the complex world of international payment systems. This experience has taught me to be more proactive and to explore potential solutions more deliberately from the outset. I would also continue to focus on user experience and streamlining the payment process. By optimizing this critical path, I'm confident that we can continue to grow our user base and provide more creators in Pakistan with the tools they need to succeed.
