🤖 Deploy Dify Self-Hosted: Build Private AI Agents & RAG Pipelines for $0
Enterprise AI platforms and APIs like OpenAI's Assistants or LangChain Hub are phenomenal—until you look at your monthly bill or realize your sensitive company data is leaving your server.
If you want to build custom AI Agents, automated workflows, and advanced RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) pipelines while keeping 100% control over your data, there is a better way: Dify.
Dify is one of the most powerful, user-friendly open-source LLM application development platforms. In this guide, we will show you how to self-host Dify in under 5 minutes on your own virtual machine, completely free of charge using a cloud promo.
Why Self-Host Dify?
- 🔒 Absolute Privacy: No third-party platform reads your uploaded PDFs, enterprise databases, or chat histories.
- ⚡ Visual Orchestration: Drag-and-drop LLM app builder (similar to LangFlow or Flowise, but much cleaner and production-ready).
- 📂 Built-in RAG Engine: Includes native PDF/text parsing, vector database storage, and hybrid search out of the box.
- 🔌 Model Agnostic: Connect easily to local models (via Ollama/Llama.cpp) or external APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic, Cohere, Groq).
Step 1: Spin Up Your Infrastructure (For $0)
To run Dify smoothly along with its database and vector store dependencies, you need a server with at least 2 vCPUs and 4GB RAM (8GB is highly recommended if you plan to parse massive datasets).
You can get a professional-grade cloud VPS completely free for 60 days to test this setup.

- Sign up using the link above to get $200 in free credits.
- Create a new Droplet (Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or 24.04 LTS).
- Select a Basic plan with 2 vCPUs / 4GB RAM (Intel/AMD premium is recommended).
Step 2: Install Docker & Docker Compose
Once you have SSH'd into your new server, make sure your package list is updated and install Docker:
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y
# Install Docker & Docker Compose
sudo apt install docker.io docker-compose-v2 -y
# Enable Docker service
sudo systemctl enable --now docker
Step 3: Clone Dify and Configure Environment
Now, clone the official Dify repository and enter the docker directory:
git clone https://github.com/langgenius/dify.git
cd dify/docker
Next, copy the environment configuration file. Dify comes with a pre-configured .env file that works out of the box for most self-hosted environments:
cp .env.example .env
(Optional: If you want to change your port or set up custom SMTP for user invites, you can edit this .env file using nano .env).
Step 4: Launch Dify
Boot up all the necessary services (Nginx, PostgreSQL, Redis, Weaviate vector DB, and the Dify api/worker components) with a single command:
sudo docker compose up -d
Give it about 1 to 2 minutes to pull the container images and initialize the databases. To check if everything is running correctly:
sudo docker compose ps
Step 5: Configure Your Admin Account
Now, open your web browser and navigate to your server's IP address:
http://YOUR_SERVER_IP
You will be greeted by the Dify Setup Wizard:
- Create your administrator account (email & secure password).
- Log in with your new credentials.
- Go to Settings -> Model Provider to hook up your preferred LLM engine (you can paste your OpenAI/Anthropic keys or point it to a local Ollama instance running on your server).
Next Steps: Build Your First AI Agent
Now that your private Dify platform is up, you can:
- Create a Knowledge Base: Upload your company documents or paste documentation links. Dify will automatically chunk, embed, and store them in the local vector DB.
- Build a Workflow: Design complex multi-step agents that fetch data from external APIs, format the response, and send it to Slack or Telegram.
- Publish as an API / Web Widget: Embed your new custom chatbot into your web app with a simple copy-paste script tag.
💡 Hosting Pro-Tip
Running production AI pipelines requires solid uptime and fast NVMe SSD storage for vector indexes. Don't host this on low-tier, unstable shared hosting.
