Ditch Vercel & Heroku: Self-Host Your Own PaaS with Coolify for Free

๐Ÿ’ธ The PaaS Pricing Trap: Why Developers are Leaving Vercel and Heroku

We've all been there: you deploy a hobby project or a client MVP to a popular PaaS like Vercel or Heroku. It works beautifully, configuration is zero, and deployment is a simple git push.

Then, the traffic hits. Or worse, a serverless function runs into an infinite loop, or you exceed your bandwidth limit by a few gigabytes. Suddenly, you are hit with a shocking bill that you didn't prepare for.

Commercial PaaS platforms are excellent for starting out, but their pricing models are designed to penalize growth. Bandwidth, team seats, and database storage are marked up by thousands of percent compared to raw cloud resources.

But what if you could have the exact same developer experienceโ€”git-push deployments, automatic SSL, reverse proxies, database backups, and preview deploymentsโ€”on your own server, without paying a single dollar in platform markups?

Enter Coolify.

๐Ÿš€ What is Coolify?

Coolify is an open-source, self-hosted alternative to Vercel, Netlify, and Heroku. It turns any Linux server into a powerful, automated PaaS (Platform as a Service).

With Coolify, you can deploy:

  • Frontend Frameworks: Next.js, Nuxt, SvelteKit, Astro, React, Vue, and more.
  • Backend Applications: Node.js, Python, Go, Rust, Ruby on Rails, PHP/Laravel.
  • Databases with One Click: PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Redis, ClickHouse, and more (complete with automatic backups).
  • Self-Hosted Services: WordPress, Ghost, Plausible Analytics, n8n, MinIO, and hundreds of other pre-configured Docker applications.

And the best part? You have complete control over your data, no vendor lock-in, and zero artificial limits.

๐ŸŽ How to Get Your High-Performance Cloud Server for $0 Upfront

To run Coolify smoothly, you need a virtual private server (VPS). While you could pay out of pocket, you don't have to.

By signing up through our official affiliate link, you can claim $200 in free credits to host your own PaaS completely free for up to 60 days:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Claim your $200 Free DigitalOcean Credits here

With this credit, you can spin up a high-performance Basic or Premium Droplet (we recommend at least 2 vCPUs and 4GB RAM to host multiple applications and databases comfortably) and experience the power of self-hosting with zero financial risk.

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Step-by-Step: Deploying Coolify in Under 10 Minutes

Letโ€™s walk through setting up your private PaaS from scratch.

Step 1: Create Your VPS

  1. Log into your DigitalOcean Account.
  2. Click Create -> Droplets.
  3. Choose Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or Ubuntu 24.04 LTS as your operating system.
  4. Select a plan with at least 4 GB RAM and 2 vCPUs (this allows you to run Coolify, multiple apps, and a database easily).
  5. Choose your nearest datacenter region for optimal latency.
  6. Select SSH Keys for authentication (recommended for security) or set a strong root password.
  7. Click Create Droplet.

Step 2: Connect via SSH

Once your Droplet is up and running, copy its public IP address and open your local terminal to connect:

ssh root@your_droplet_ip
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Step 3: Run the Coolify Installation Script

Coolify provides a highly optimized, one-line installation script that automatically configures Docker, sets up reverse proxies, and installs the Coolify dashboard.

Run the following command in your server terminal:

curl -fsSL https://cdn.coollabs.io/coolify/install.sh | bash
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Note: The installation process will take 2-3 minutes. It will download the necessary Docker images and configure your system security settings.

Step 4: Access Your Dashboard and Configure SSL

Once the installation is complete, the terminal will display your access URL, which is typically:

http://your_droplet_ip:8000

  1. Open this URL in your web browser.
  2. Create your administrator account (username and password).
  3. Follow the on-screen onboarding wizard to configure your wildcard domain (e.g., *.yourdomain.com). Coolify will automatically provision free, auto-renewing Let's Encrypt SSL certificates for every application you deploy!

โšก Deploying Your First App (GitHub Integration)

Deploying an app with Coolify is incredibly intuitive:

  1. Connect GitHub: Go to Sources in your Coolify dashboard and link your GitHub account or specify a public repository.
  2. Create a New Project: Click Projects -> Add New Resource.
  3. Select Your Repository: Choose the repository and branch you want to deploy.
  4. Choose Your Build Pack: Coolify automatically detects if your app is a Next.js, Node, Go, or Python app. It will auto-configure the build steps and environment variables.
  5. Click Deploy: Watch the real-time build logs. In a few seconds, your app will be live with a secure https:// URL!

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Why This Changes Everything

By moving away from commercial PaaS platforms to your own VPS running Coolify, you unlock incredible advantages:

  • No Active Limits: Run as many projects, databases, and cron jobs as your server's hardware can handle.
  • Flat Pricing: No matter if you get 10,000 or 1,000,000 requests, your cloud server bill remains exactly the same. No surprise overage charges.
  • Extreme Performance: By running your databases and backend apps on the same virtual server, internal latency drops to virtually zero.

Ready to reclaim control of your cloud deployments and stop paying inflated PaaS bills?
