Posted by the FileFreight team. We build a flat-rate delivery tool for digital sellers: secure download links, per-buyer PDF stamping, and license keys. Fee figures below are from Etsy's own Fees & Payments Policy and Help Center (checked October 13, 2026) and ours. US-seller math.
Ask an Etsy seller what they pay per sale and most will say "6.5%." That's the transaction fee — and it's only the first line of the stack.
For a digital-download listing, the full per-sale stack looks like this:
- Transaction fee: 6.5% of the price
- Listing fee: $0.20 — and a multi-quantity listing renews at $0.20 after each item sells, so for a digital listing that keeps selling, that $0.20 is effectively a per-sale cost
- Etsy Payments processing (US): 3% + $0.25 per order
There is no tier that erases this. Etsy Plus ($10/month) gives you credits and tools — it does not cut the 6.5%.
What a sale actually costs
| Sale price | Transaction 6.5% | Listing renewal | Processing 3% + $0.25 | Total Etsy take | Effective rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $5 | $0.33 | $0.20 | $0.40 | $0.93 | 18.5% |
| $10 | $0.65 | $0.20 | $0.55 | $1.40 | 14.0% |
| $20 | $1.30 | $0.20 | $0.85 | $2.35 | 11.8% |
| $50 | $3.25 | $0.20 | $1.75 | $5.20 | 10.4% |
And that's before Offsite Ads: if an order is attributed to an Etsy ad, add 15% (shops under $10k/year, opt-out available) or 12% ($10k+/year shops — mandatory for the life of the shop), capped at $100 per order. That's conditional, so it's not in the table — but for sellers who can't opt out, it's very real.
The flat-fee breakeven
Processing is roughly a wash either way (on your own Stripe account you'd pay ~2.9% + $0.30 instead), so the honest comparison is platform fees only: Etsy's 6.5% + $0.20 per sale against a flat $19/month with 0% per sale (that's our Pro plan).
| Avg. price | Etsy platform cost / sale | Sales/month where that hits $19 | Revenue at that point |
|---|---|---|---|
| $5 | $0.53 | ~37 | ~$185 |
| $10 | $0.85 | ~23 | ~$230 |
| $20 | $1.50 | ~13 | ~$260 |
| $50 | $3.45 | ~6 | ~$300 |
Transaction fee alone, the headline breakeven is $19 ÷ 6.5% ≈ $292/month in sales. The $0.20-per-sale renewal pulls it lower for the low-ticket, high-volume listings — patterns, SVGs, printables, planners, presets — that dominate Etsy's digital side.
The honest caveats (read these)
- Etsy is a marketplace. We are not. Etsy brings search traffic and buyers you'd never reach on your own. FileFreight is delivery-only: no storefront, no search, no discovery. Nothing here replaces that — and Etsy's own policies prohibit diverting an Etsy-initiated transaction off-platform to avoid fees. The legitimate play is narrower: keep Etsy for discovery, and run the sales your own audience brings you (your email list, your socials, your site) through a flat-rate direct channel instead of paying the per-sale stack on those too.
- Tax handling. Etsy calculates, collects, and remits US sales tax in most states and handles digital VAT collection in covered jurisdictions. We are not a merchant of record and do none of that: payments go to your own Stripe account, so tax responsibility stays with you. That service is genuinely worth money to many sellers.
- No automatic importer. We can't one-click migrate your catalog (yet). We do offer free white-glove migration for our first 20 sellers — products, files, and license keys rebuilt by hand within 48 hours.
- We're not an Etsy integration or a Shopify app. We're a delivery layer you link from wherever you sell: expiring download links, per-buyer PDF stamping (a leaked copy traces back to the buyer), license keys with revocation, refund auto-revoke.
- Below the breakeven, Etsy wins on price. Selling a handful of items a month, the stack costs you a few dollars and a flat plan costs $19. Stay.
Who should actually do the math
- Your Etsy shop is your discovery engine but your Instagram/email audience does the buying? Price out moving those direct sales — at ~$230/month of $10 downloads you're already past the flat-$19 breakeven on platform fees alone.
- Etsy search is your only traffic and your volume is small? Honestly, stay — and re-run this math when your direct channel grows.
If the math works for you: FileFreight — Free plan is $0 + 5% per sale, Pro is $19/month flat with 0% per-sale fees. First 20 sellers get free manual migration.
Fee sources: Etsy's Fees & Payments Policy (etsy.com/legal/fees) and Help Center fee articles, checked October 13, 2026. Offsite Ads rates are conditional on ad attribution and are excluded from the breakeven math. Our pricing: getfilefreight.com/#pricing.

Good that the tables show the effective rate falling as the price goes up, and the arithmetic checks out, I re-added the $5 to $50 rows. A version readers can use with their own price: break-even sales per month = 19 / (0.065 × P + 0.20), where P is the average sale price. For P = 10 that is 19 / 0.85 = 22.4, so about 23 sales, matching your table.
One refinement: if a share f of the orders comes through Offsite Ads at 15%, add f × 0.15 × P to the denominator. With f = 20% and P = 10 the denominator becomes 1.15 and the break-even drops to about 17 sales a month. It is worth estimating that share from your own order history before comparing plans.
