Gumroad's 50¢ fixed fee means low-ticket sellers don't pay 10% — they pay 15–27%

Posted by the FileFreight team. We build a flat-rate delivery tool for digital sellers: secure download links, per-buyer PDF stamping, and license keys. Fee figures below are from Gumroad's own pricing page (checked October 12, 2026) and ours.

Gumroad's headline fee is "10% + 50¢" on direct sales. Most sellers read that as "I pay about 10%."

If you sell low-ticket products — $3–$10 templates, presets, ebooks, sample packs — you don't. The fixed 50¢ quietly rewrites your effective rate, and it rewrites it most exactly where small sellers live.

The effective-rate table nobody runs

Gumroad's per-sale platform fee is 0.10 × price + $0.50. As a share of the price:

Product price Gumroad fee per sale Effective rate
$3 $0.80 26.7%
$5 $1.00 20.0%
$10 $1.50 15.0%
$20 $2.50 12.5%
$50 $5.50 11.0%

The "10%" only arrives asymptotically, at prices most indie sellers never charge. And card processing is charged on top of this (an independent fee comparison this month, applying published rates, put the all-in cost of a $10 Gumroad sale at $2.09 — 20.9% of the price).

Sales through Gumroad Discover are steeper still: 30% per Gumroad's pricing page.

What that does to the flat-fee breakeven

The usual rule of thumb says a $19/month flat fee (that's our Pro plan: $19, 0% per sale) beats a 10% fee at $190/month in sales. That rule ignores the 50¢. With it, the breakeven drops — a lot — for low-ticket sellers:

Product price Sales/month where Gumroad's fees alone hit $19 Revenue at that point
$3 ~24 sales ~$71
$5 19 sales $95
$10 ~13 sales ~$127
$20 ~8 sales ~$152
$50 ~3.5 sales ~$173

If you sell on Discover, the breakeven against a flat $19 is about $63/month in sales (19 ÷ 0.30).

In other words: if you move ~20 copies a month of a $5 product through Gumroad direct, you are already paying more in platform fees than a flat $19/month — before processing, which you pay either way when the money runs through your own Stripe account.

The honest caveats (read these)

  1. Gumroad is your merchant of record. Since January 2025 Gumroad handles sales tax and VAT collection/remittance worldwide for you — its pricing page says so explicitly. We don't do that: payments go straight to your own Stripe account, so tax responsibility stays with you. If you sell globally and dread VAT paperwork, that service is genuinely worth money.
  2. Gumroad has no monthly fee. If you sell three copies a month, Gumroad costs you ~$3 and a flat plan costs $19. Below the breakevens above, Gumroad is cheaper. Stay.
  3. Gumroad is a marketplace and storefront, not just delivery. Discover can bring you buyers you'd never reach, and the product pages, email tools, and memberships are real. We're delivery-only: expiring download links, per-buyer PDF stamping (a leaked copy traces back to the buyer), license keys with revocation, refund auto-revoke. If Discover drives your sales, its 30% may be a marketing cost, not waste.
  4. No automatic importer. We can't one-click migrate your Gumroad catalog (yet). We do offer free white-glove migration for our first 20 sellers — products, files, and license keys rebuilt by hand within 48 hours.
  5. We're not a Shopify app, and Stripe processing fees (~2.9% + $0.30) apply on our plans — the 0% is our cut, not the card network's.

Who should actually switch

  • Selling ~$95+/month of ~$5 products, ~$127+/month of ~$10 products, or ~$63+/month via Discover? On platform fees alone, you're past the flat-$19 breakeven — and the gap grows with every sale.
  • Selling sporadically, at high prices, or leaning on Gumroad's tax handling and Discover traffic? Honestly, stay. Fees aren't everything, and switching costs are real.

If the math works for you: FileFreight — Free plan is $0 + 5% per sale, Pro is $19/month flat with 0% per-sale fees. And if you're on Gumroad now, we'll move you for free (first 20 sellers).
