I Built Finance Lab: A Portfolio Analytics and Paper-Trading App with Python

Hi DEV Community!

I’m Henrique, a Master’s student in Finance at ISEG. I wanted to turn some of the financial concepts I was studying into something practical, so I built Finance Lab — a free web application for portfolio analysis, stock research and paper trading.

What can you do with Finance Lab?

  • Research stocks and explore financial statements
  • Create and manage simulated investment portfolios
  • Follow live market prices and watchlists
  • Analyse return, volatility and Sharpe ratio
  • Calculate Value at Risk and Expected Shortfall
  • Study drawdowns, diversification and stress scenarios
  • Export professional Excel reports
  • Create a private account and keep portfolio data between sessions

Technology

Finance Lab was built using:

  • Python
  • Streamlit
  • Pandas and NumPy
  • Plotly
  • yfinance
  • Supabase
  • GitHub and Streamlit Community Cloud

Try the application

Open Finance Lab

Finance Lab is an educational project and does not provide financial advice.

I would really appreciate honest feedback about the interface, usability and financial analysis features. What would you improve or add next?
