How to Start Working When You Really Do Not Feel Like It

Most procrastination is not laziness. It is the friction of starting. The task feels big, vague or boring, and your brain picks something easier. The fix is not more willpower. It is making the first step so small that refusing it feels silly.

Shrink the first step

"Write the report" is not a task, it is a project. "Open the document and write three bullet points" is a task. When you cannot start, the step is still too big. Cut it in half until it feels almost too easy.

Use a short timer

A fixed block of time removes the question of how long you will suffer. Fifteen minutes is enough on hard days. Twenty five minutes is the classic Pomodoro block. Tell yourself you are allowed to stop when the timer ends. Most of the time, you will not want to.

Put the phone out of reach

Every glance at a notification restarts the effort of getting back into the task. Lock the phone and put it face down, or in another room. Check messages during the break, not during the block.

Reward the session, not the result

You do not control whether today's work is brilliant. You do control whether you showed up for one block. Celebrate that. A visible reward right after a session teaches your brain that starting is worth it.

Keep a streak

A chain of days with at least one finished session is a simple and strong motivator. On bad days, one short block keeps the chain alive. That is enough.

A two minute plan for tomorrow morning

  1. Write down the smallest first step of your most important task.
  2. Choose a timer length, 15 or 25 minutes.
  3. Lock the phone before you start.
  4. After the timer, take your reward and decide if you do one more block.

A tool built around this

I made FocusDex, a gamified focus app for iPhone. You choose a session length, earn experience and candies when you finish, keep a daily streak and complete three small daily challenges. A Live Activity shows the countdown on your Lock Screen. As a secondary reward, a pixel art companion grows with your consistency. There is no account and your data stays on your phone.

Start smaller than you think, and let the streak do the rest. More guides on the FocusDex site.
