Most videos get better the moment you cut them shorter. A slow start, a fumbled line in the middle, a long goodbye at the end: removing those is the whole job, and you shouldn't need to install anything to do it.
I'm Fred Abila, and I build Vidmoat, a hosted AI video editor. You get a real multi-track timeline in the browser, plus a chat with an agent that makes edits on that timeline, so every cut it makes is a clip you can still drag by hand. The same projects open in the iPhone, Android, Mac and Windows apps (vidmoat.com/download), and you can send a clip to @vidmoat_bot on Telegram. Here is how I trim and cut a video in it, step by step.
Trimming vs cutting: what you're actually doing
Two words, two jobs:
- Trimming shortens a clip from its ends. You drag the start in or the end in, and nothing in the middle changes.
- Cutting (or splitting) slices a clip into pieces at the playhead, so you can delete a piece from the middle and close the gap.
Almost every "make this shorter" job is some mix of the two. None of it changes the pixels you keep.
Step 1: Upload or import your video
Open vidmoat.com and start a project. It opens on an empty timeline.
- Open the Media Library tab in the left panel and use Upload / drop media, or drag the file straight onto the panel. Video, images and audio all work.
- Drag the file to a track, or double-click it to drop it at the playhead. On a phone, tap it.
Files larger than 8 MB upload in chunks in the background. The clip shows up on the timeline straight away with an ⬆ UPLOADING badge. Don't close the tab until that badge clears, or you can come back to a blank clip.
In the Mac or Windows app you can open local footage without uploading it first. That file then lives only on that computer, so either export from the desktop app or upload the file before you export from the web.
Step 2: Trim the start and the end
Drag either end of the clip inward. That's a trim. On a touchscreen, tap the clip first; the trim handles only appear once it's selected. With Snap on, the edge sticks to the playhead, to zero, to markers and to other clips, which makes it easy to land on the exact frame you parked on.
For finer control, select the clip and open the Inspector's A/V tab. The Trim section nudges by 1 second or 0.1 second, and also offers roll edits (move the cut between two clips without changing total length), slip (change which part of the file plays without moving the clip) and slide (move the clip while its neighbour absorbs the change).
Step 3: Split and delete a section in the middle
This is how you cut out the middle of a video:
- Park the playhead where the unwanted part starts. Select the clip and press B (or the Split button on the timeline toolbar).
- Move the playhead to where it ends and split again.
- Select the piece in between and press Delete or Backspace.
- Drag the right-hand clip left so the gap closes, with Snap on so it butts cleanly.
The scissors (the Split tool, key C) cuts any clip you click on, which is quicker when you're making several cuts in a row. On a phone, the clip action bar has a Split button.
Step 4: Cut by transcript
If the video is mostly talking, reading is faster than scrubbing. In Text Mode, the Transcript panel transcribes a clip with Transcribe this clip, which runs on your device and uses no credits. Select the words you don't want and press Cut: that removes the footage from the timeline and closes the gap.
Right next to it is Correct, which only fixes the text of a misheard word and doesn't touch the footage. Don't mix them up. The in-browser transcription is English only.
Step 5: Remove pauses without overdoing it
Silences and "um"s are the other big source of length. I wrote a separate guide on that, so I won't repeat it here: How to cut dead air in a talking-head video without jump-cutting too hard. The short version: leave a breath between sentences, and watch the result at full speed.
Step 6: Ask the agent, then fix it by hand
The Agent console on the right of the editor is on every plan. Type what you'd say to a human editor:
"Cut the first 10 seconds and remove the part where I cough."
It reads your timeline and makes the cuts as ordinary clips on the tracks. It can also capture frames from the preview to check its own work. Then you take over: play it back, drag an edge if a cut is a beat early, undo (Ctrl+Z) anything you don't like. Undo is yours to press; the agent doesn't do it for you.
Agent runs spend AI credits. Manual cutting, trimming and markers never do, so if credits are tight, let the agent do the tedious first pass and do the polish yourself.
Keyboard shortcuts for trimming and cutting
These are the bound keys from Vidmoat's editing basics page:
- Space plays or pauses. J, K and L shuttle backward, pause and forward, doubling speed up to 8x.
- Left and Right step one frame; with Shift they jump 5 seconds. Up and Down jump between edit points. Home and End go to the start and end.
- B splits at the playhead. Delete or Backspace removes selected clips.
- M adds a marker, Shift+M removes one. Ctrl+Z undoes, Ctrl+Shift+Z redoes.
- S is the select tool, C the split tool, H the hand tool. Plus and minus zoom the timeline.
- Press ? for the full cheatsheet.
One quirk: some tool buttons are labelled "Select (V)", but the key that works is S.
Step 7: Export
Press Export in the top bar. Presets cover YouTube, TikTok / Reels, X / Twitter and Draft preview (half resolution, low quality, for a quick check). Formats are MP4, WEBM or GIF at 24, 30 or 60 fps, with Draft, Standard or High quality, and loudness normalisation to -14 LUFS on by default.
Be clear on what the free plan gives you. Hobby exports cap at 720 on the short edge (1280x720 for 16:9, 720x1280 for 9:16), carry a small Vidmoat watermark in the bottom-right plus a 2-second end card, and Hobby allows 3 projects. For a clean file, Creator removes the watermark and end card and goes up to 4K; if you only need one video, a Day Pass gives Creator access for 24 hours, 3 days or 7 days. Details are on the pricing page. For 4K, set the 4K tier in Project Settings first, because the export mirrors the canvas.
Trimming a video on your phone
Two routes:
- The apps. Vidmoat for iPhone (iOS 16.4 or later) and Android (Android 7.0 or later) open the same cloud projects. Tap a clip to show its trim handles, and use Split in the clip action bar.
- Telegram. Send the clip to @vidmoat_bot and ask, in plain words, for the trim you want. Every plan works there, with the same projects and credits.
Common mistakes when trimming and cutting
- Leaving gaps. Deleting a middle piece leaves black space until you close it. Snap the clips together, or cut from the transcript, which closes the gap for you.
- Cutting mid-word. Step frame by frame with Left and Right before you split. A cut on a syllable sounds like a glitch.
- Captioning before cutting. Captions describe the audio they were given. Cut first, caption last, or regenerate after.
- Pressing Correct when you meant Cut, or the other way round, in the Transcript panel.
- Closing the tab mid-upload. Wait for the ⬆ UPLOADING badge to clear.
- Never watching it through. Play the full cut once at normal speed before you export. Jumpy pacing is obvious at 1x and invisible while scrubbing.
Vidmoat is young, and a small operation compared with the bigger players. If something in these steps behaves differently for you, tell me.
Try it
Open vidmoat.com, drop in a clip, and ask the agent to cut the first 10 seconds and the part where you stumble. Then drag the edges until it feels right and export. Or send a clip to @vidmoat_bot from your phone.
FAQ
Can I trim a video online for free?
Yes. Vidmoat's Hobby plan is free with no card required, and trimming, splitting and deleting by hand never spend credits. Free exports cap at 720p and carry a small watermark and a 2-second end card, and you get 3 projects. Creator or a Day Pass removes the watermark and end card.
Does trimming reduce quality?
Trimming doesn't change the frames you keep, but the export settings do. Choose High quality and full resolution. On Hobby the export caps at 720 on the short edge; Creator and above go to 4K.
How do I cut out the middle of a video?
Split at the start of the unwanted part (B), split at the end, select the piece between and press Delete, then close the gap. For talking videos, select the words in the Transcript panel and press Cut instead.
Can I trim a video on my phone?
Yes. Use the Vidmoat iPhone or Android app, where you tap a clip to get trim handles and use Split in the clip action bar, or send the clip to @vidmoat_bot on Telegram and ask for the cut.
Can AI trim my video for me?
Yes. Ask the agent in plain words, such as "cut the first 10 seconds and remove the part where I cough". It makes the cuts on the timeline, where you can adjust them by hand. Agent runs spend AI credits.
