  • For long durations (a decade), older people did perceive time as moving faster.

That "something else" is memory density. The proportional theory is mathematically elegant but psychologically incomplete. What matters isn't the fraction of your life a year represents. It's how many distinct experiences you packed into that year.


How Emotion Warps Time

Time perception isn't just about memory. It's also about emotion. And emotion can stretch or compress time in dramatic ways.

Fear and the Slow-Motion Effect

Have you ever been in a car accident, or nearly fallen from a height, and experienced time seeming to slow down? This isn't just a metaphor. Research by David Eagleman and colleagues at Baylor College of Medicine suggests that terrifying moments genuinely alter time perception.

In a now-famous study, Eagleman had participants free-fall from a 150-foot tower while wearing a wristwatch that flashed numbers too quickly to perceive under normal conditions. The participants reported that the fall felt much longer than it actually was. But crucially, they couldn't read the flashing numbers any better than when they weren't falling.

The conclusion? Fear doesn't actually speed up your brain's processing power. Instead, it creates denser memories. Your brain encodes more detail during threatening moments, and when you remember them, they feel longer.

It's the holiday paradox, but for trauma.

Awe and the Expanded Present

On the opposite end of the emotional spectrum, awe also alters time perception. Research by Melanie Rudd, Kathleen Vohs, and Jennifer Aaker found that experiencing awe makes people feel like they have more time available.

In one experiment, participants who watched an awe-inspiring video (of stunning natural landscapes) reported feeling less impatient and more willing to volunteer their time than participants who watched a happiness-inducing video. Awe, it seems, expands the present moment.

The mechanism isn't fully understood, but it likely involves awe's ability to pull you out of self-focused rumination and into the present. When you're not mentally time-traveling to the past or future, the present moment expands to fill your consciousness.


The Neuroscience of Time

Your brain has no single "clock." Instead, time perception emerges from distributed neural networks that coordinate memory, attention, emotion, and bodily states.

The Striatum and the Dopamine Clock

The basal ganglia, particularly the striatum, play a crucial role in timing short intervals (seconds to minutes). Dopamine neurons in this region appear to act as a kind of neural metronome. This region helps you reconstruct time from memory, which explains why retrospective time perception is so tied to memory density. When your prefrontal cortex estimates how long ago something happened, it's essentially counting memories.


Can You Slow Time Down?

Yes. And no.

You can't change the actual passage of time, obviously. But you can change your experience of it. Both in the moment and in memory.

The Novelty Strategy

The most effective way to slow time is to break routines and seek novelty. New experiences force your brain to encode more memories, which makes time feel richer and longer in retrospect.

This doesn't require dramatic life changes. Small novelties work too:

Deliberately seeking awe-inspiring experiences expands your sense of time availability. Watch a sunset. Stare at the stars. Listen to music that gives you chills. Stand before something vast, ancient, or beautiful.

Awe pulls you out of your routine self and into something larger. And in that space, time loosens its grip.

The Learning Strategy

Childhood felt long partly because you were constantly learning. Adult life often stagnates intellectually. Recommitting to learning - a language, an instrument, a field of study - reintroduces the cognitive effort that makes time feel substantial.

Learning is inherently novel. It requires attention, error-correction, and memory formation. It forces your brain to stay engaged rather than running on autopilot.


The Existential Angle

There's a deeper layer to all of this.

The acceleration of time isn't just a psychological curiosity. It's an existential warning. When your life blurs together, you're not really living it. You're sleepwalking through it. The routines that make time speed up are also the routines that make life feel empty.

Philosopher Martin Heidegger distinguished between "authentic" and "inauthentic" existence. Inauthentic existence is the unexamined life, lived according to social scripts and habitual patterns. Authentic existence involves confronting your own mortality and choosing how to spend your finite time.
