"It's too late for you to get into open source."
That was what a friend told me recently during a casual conversation about tech and career growth. They argued that the open-source ecosystem is already saturated, that the learning curve is too steep, and that everyone else started years ahead of me.
Hearing that triggered a massive dose of FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out). For a moment, I wondered if I had missed the train entirely.
But then I realized something: open source isn't a race with a fixed finish line—it’s an evolving ecosystem. Every single day, new tools, libraries, and frameworks are created. With open-weight AI models and new developer tools exploding in 2026, there has never been a more exciting time to build in public.
Why I'm Diving into Hacktoberfest 2026
Instead of letting the fear of being "too late" paralyze me, I decided to turn that anxiety into action. That’s why I’m officially participating in Hacktoberfest 2026.
Here is what I’m aiming to achieve this month:
Develop Real-World Skills: Move beyond local sandbox projects and learn how real software gets built, documented, and reviewed.
Embrace the AI & Open Source Shift: Explore building with open-weight models and modern open-source developer tooling.
Connect with the Community: Engage with fellow developers, learn from mentors, and contribute to projects larger than myself.
Fighting the Open Source FOMO
If you're reading this and feeling intimidated—whether by complex codebases, Git workflows, or the fear of making a mistake in public—here is my reminder to both of us:
The best time to start was yesterday. The second best time is right now.
Imposter syndrome and FOMO disappear the moment you write your first line of code or publish your first write-up. I'm excited to share my progress, wins, and learnings right here on DEV throughout October.
