Cursor vs Claude Code vs Windsurf: Which One Handles Context Loss the Worst? (Real Tests)

After spending weeks with all three AI coding assistants, I ran into the same problem across every single one: they all forget things at the worst possible moment.

So I decided to actually test this systematically.

The Test Setup

I tracked context loss events across a 2-week period using real projects:

  • A React dashboard with ~8,000 lines of code
  • A Python API with 12 endpoints
  • A full-stack Next.js app

I logged every time:

  1. The AI "forgot" something I had explained earlier
  2. I had to re-explain architecture decisions
  3. Mid-session context got wiped (compaction events, memory limits)

Results: Context Loss by Tool

Claude Code

Context Loss Events: 23 over 2 weeks

The culprit? Compaction. When conversations get long, Claude Code compresses (compacts) the earlier context. The AI keeps going, but suddenly loses memory of things you said 2 hours ago.

The warning sign: Claude starts making suggestions that contradict decisions you already made.

Example from my notes:

"After compaction, it suggested adding Redux for state management — the exact thing I had told it NOT to use 90 minutes earlier because we're using Zustand."

Cursor

Context Loss Events: 31 over 2 weeks

Cursor's problem is different: tab-based context. Each Cursor tab has its own context. When you switch tasks, the previous context just... evaporates.

Also: Cursor's "auto" context window mode sometimes silently drops files from context when things get too large. You won't notice until the AI gives you wrong code.

Example:

"Switched to fix a bug in the auth module, then came back to the feature I was building. Cursor had no memory of the component structure we had designed."

Windsurf

Context Loss Events: 18 over 2 weeks

Windsurf actually handles this best of the three — but "best" is relative. It has better cascade context (understanding related files), but long sessions still degrade.

The main issue: once you close a Cascade session, that context is gone forever. No way to resume where you left off the next day.

The Real Problem: None of Them Have Memory

Here's what I realized: all three tools are stateless by design. They process the current conversation window and that's it.

This means:

  • Day 1: Explain your architecture, make decisions, build features
  • Day 2: Start fresh. The AI has no memory of Day 1.

For anything beyond a simple script, this creates real friction.

What I've Been Doing About It

I started using Mantra — it works like a time machine for AI coding sessions.

The workflow:

  1. Save a "snapshot" of your session state (context, decisions, current code state)
  2. When context gets lost or you start a new session, restore the snapshot
  3. The AI immediately has the full picture again

What I track in snapshots:

  • Current task and status
  • Architecture decisions made (and why)
  • Files being worked on
  • Pending items and blockers
  • Key code patterns/conventions

After 3 weeks with this approach: my context loss events dropped to near zero, and I stopped re-explaining the same things repeatedly.

Which One Is Worst?

Honestly: Cursor loses the most context in absolute numbers, especially if you're multi-tasking across different features.

But Claude Code's compaction is the sneakiest — it happens mid-task without warning, so you often don't realize the AI has lost important context until it gives you bad code.

Windsurf is the most manageable, but the lack of cross-session memory is a real issue for multi-day projects.

Bottom Line

None of these tools have solved the memory problem. They're all incredible for generating code — but they all suffer from the same fundamental limitation: no persistent memory of your project context.

Until that changes, the best solution I've found is maintaining your own session state and restoring it at the start of each conversation.
