AEO for agencies: why AI visibility is your next service line

Your clients hired you to rank on Google. Google now answers half their questions before users click anything. The traffic is moving to ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. You need to follow it.

This is the AEO problem for agencies. Your clients don't know yet. Their boards don't know yet. But their CFOs will notice when the phone stops ringing. You can be the person who fixes that.

AI visibility is not an extension of SEO. It's a separate channel with different rules. Google rewards inbound links and topical authority. AI models reward cited sources, specific claims, and structured data that's easy to parse. The skills you've built over years of SEO work don't fully transfer here.

Start here: Run an AEO audit for your top five clients. Check if they show up in Claude answers about their industry. Check ChatGPT. Check Gemini. Most brands show up zero times. Zero citations. Zero visibility. That's your opening conversation.

The positioning is clean. You've built their search visibility. Now you're protecting it from AI cannibalization while capturing a new channel. Two separate services. Two separate revenue lines. One unified client conversation.

The service itself has three components. First, you audit where they appear in AI answers today and how often they're cited. Second, you identify the content gaps that are keeping them invisible to AI models. Third, you build a content and technical strategy to get them cited in the answers their customers are asking.

The technical layer matters more than most agencies think. AI models cite sources. They pull from structured data when it's clean. They prioritize content that's easy to excerpt and attribute. Your clients probably have messy schema, bloated paragraphs, and no clear entity definition. You'll fix that.

The content layer is where the real work happens. You'll map the questions their customers ask. You'll check which AI models are answering those questions and which sources they're pulling from. You'll either work with your client to improve existing content or create new content built specifically for AI citation. This is different from blog posts. This is content engineered for extraction.

Pricing should reflect the value. If a client gets cited in ChatGPT answers ten times a month instead of zero, that's not a minor SEO win. That's visibility in front of millions of users who are already in research mode. A baseline AEO service should run between three and seven thousand a month. Larger enterprises with more complex questions should pay more.

Your clients will ask if this actually drives revenue. The answer is yes, but not always measurable. Some traffic will come directly from AI answer links. More importantly, users seeing your client's brand cited repeatedly will remember it when they're ready to buy. Brand visibility in AI answers compounds over time.

AEO is not a bet on the future. It's happening now. Claude is getting mainstream adoption. ChatGPT's mobile search partnership is live. Gemini is integrated into Android. These channels are already pulling traffic from Google. Your clients are already losing visibility there. You're just helping them get it back.

Start small. Pick two or three clients in different industries. Run full AEO audits. Build a case study. Show your CEO or business partner what it looks like. You'll see pretty quickly whether this is a real service or not. It is.

Check your own clients' AI visibility right now. Run a free AEO score at engagemii.com/aeo. See where they stand today. That score becomes the starting point for your first AEO conversation. It's the easiest way to prove the problem exists.
