The Only AEO Metric That Actually Matters

Most brands have no idea if they're showing up in Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini. They assume their SEO work transfers over. It doesn't. AI answers pull from different sources. They weight freshness differently. They prioritize different types of content. You need to actually watch what's happening in real time.

The old way was to Google yourself and hope. That doesn't work anymore. You can't manually check if your brand appears in AI citations across platforms. You'll miss patterns. You'll miss the moment you drop out of answers you used to own. By then the damage is done.

AI visibility compounds like SEO did fifteen years ago. Brands that track it weekly beat those that check quarterly. Brands that respond to drops in two days beat those that respond in two weeks. The window is narrow.

Start with one metric: citation rate. This is the percentage of relevant AI queries where your brand actually gets mentioned. Not ranked. Mentioned. Your citation rate is your baseline. Track it weekly. If you're in five AI queries about your category and only cited in two, your citation rate is 40%. That number should increase every month.

Watch your citation rate by platform. Gemini citations behave differently than ChatGPT citations. Claude answers differently still. A brand might have strong GEO (Google Engine Optimization) but weak ChatGPT visibility. You need to know where you're weak so you can fix it there first.

The second metric that matters is your position in the answer. Being cited isn't enough. Position in the response matters. Early citations get more trust. Later citations feel like afterthoughts. If you track citations but not their depth in the answer, you're missing half the story.

Track velocity. Did your citations jump up in week three after you published something? Then you know that piece of content works. Did they drop after a competitor published their own guide? Then you need to respond. Without weekly tracking you'll never see these moves until it's too late.

Set up alerts for the queries that matter most to your business. Your top ten revenue keywords. Your brand name. Your CEO's name if you're a public figure. You should know within hours if you stop appearing in answers about those topics. Not days. Hours.

Most teams struggle here because they're waiting for a magic tool. But you can build a simple tracking system in a spreadsheet. Pick five target queries. Check them manually in each major AI platform every Monday. Write down if you're cited. Write down your position. Do this for four weeks and you'll see patterns emerge.

The hard part isn't measurement. The hard part is responding fast. You need a content team that can move. You need processes that don't require six approvals. You need to know which content formats actually improve your citation rate for your specific category. Speed kills in AEO the same way it does in startups.

Your AI visibility is your most underrated asset right now. Most competitors aren't tracking it at all. Most brands are flying blind. This is where you build an advantage. Not in the next eighteen months. This quarter.

Start measuring today. Check your AEO score for free at engagemii.com/aeo. See exactly where your brand shows up in AI answers right now. See the gaps. Then start closing them weekly instead of wondering why you disappeared.
