At a glance: 13,829 GitHub stars, 1,093 forks, v0.7.1, 2 tools, MIT license, ~53.4K weekly npm downloads. Rating: 4/5.
Framelink is the community Figma MCP server that's become the de facto standard for design-to-code workflows — with 34x more stars than Figma's official guide repo.
What It Does
Two tools:
-
get_figma_data— fetches structure, styling, and layout from a Figma link. Simplifies raw API response to include only relevant layout/styling info. -
download_figma_images— downloads SVG/PNG assets from Figma (still WIP).
Why It Wins
Descriptive output beats prescriptive output. Figma's official server sends <div className="flex gap-4 p-6 bg-white rounded-xl"> — your AI copies that even if you use Vue or Svelte. Framelink sends {layout: "horizontal", gap: 16, padding: 24} — your AI generates code matching your project.
Component nesting preserved. Official server flattens hierarchies. Framelink keeps the tree, so AI generates composable components.
~25% smaller payloads. Less context window consumption, more accurate AI responses.
Works with any Figma account. No Dev seat required. Standard API rate limits instead of official server's 6-calls-per-month free cap.
53,400+ weekly npm downloads — up 4.6x from ~11,500 two weeks prior.
What's Not
- Only 2 tools (one WIP) — no design tokens, Code Connect, or code-to-canvas
- Figma API rate limits hit hard (429 errors reported)
- No write operations — read-only
- Stdio-only transport — no remote hosted server like Figma's
mcp.figma.com/mcp - No proxy support
- API key via CLI arg puts token in shell history (env var available but not default)
Framelink vs Official Figma MCP
| Feature | Framelink | Figma Official |
|---|---|---|
| Stars | 13,829 | 443 |
| Tools | 2 | 13 |
| Output | Descriptive JSON | Prescriptive React/Tailwind |
| Component nesting | Preserved | Flattened |
| Free tier | Figma API limits | 6 calls/month |
| Write ops | No | Yes |
| Transport | Stdio (npx) | Remote HTTP |
They complement rather than compete. Framelink wins for read design → generate code. Official wins for code-to-canvas and Code Connect.
What's New (March 2026)
-
v0.7.0 — sharp replaced with jimp (fixes macOS ARM),
--image-dirconfig, GIF support - CVE-2025-53967 — command injection RCE patched in v0.6.3 (Sep 2025)
- Downloads surging 4.6x in March 2026
The Bottom Line
Rating: 4/5 — Produces better code output than the official Figma MCP for the most common workflow. Descriptive JSON, preserved hierarchies, 25% smaller payloads, zero cost barriers. Loses a point for limited tools, no write ops, no remote server. 13,829 stars and 53K weekly downloads make it the most adopted design-to-code MCP server.
