American Express introduced the Intent Intelligence Framework to secure transactions made by AI shopping agents.
The system uses a Create Intent API to capture purchase parameters, generating an Intent ID and Proof of Intent Token to issue secure digital payment credentials.
The new system works by recording the precise instructions and limits set by the user before a transaction is completed. According to Hannah Bozian, the company's head of partnership strategy, the goal is to maintain security and trust as automated shopping becomes more common.
How the shopping system works
The process begins when the user gives their commands to the digital assistant, specifying details such as the store name, maximum amount available and preferences. The system then generates a unique identifier and a special digital receipt containing the user's limits.
This information is used to issue a temporary, secure digital payment card that the assistant uses at checkout instead of the actual credit card number. This helps prevent any errors or unintentional charges from AI programs.
What the data shows for consumers
The company's research shows that 66% of consumers in the United States are likely to use digital assistants for price research, while 61% plan to leverage them for product recommendations.
The new system follows the release of a separate set of developer tools the company unveiled last April. American Express plans to showcase the framework in detail at TechCrunch Disrupt, which will take place on October 13, 2026.
