An EU filing says Apple will offer jobs to some Huxe employees and take a non-exclusive license to the startup’s intellectual property.
It does not identify the employees or confirm whether they accepted.
The agreement is not an acquisition of Huxe, which announced it would close on May 21.
Apple disclosed the agreement in a document filed with the European Commission. The license is non-exclusive, meaning Apple does not gain the exclusive right to use the technology. The document does not say which employees received offers or whether they accepted them.
Huxe’s founders had worked on NotebookLM’s AI-powered podcasting features. NotebookLM was recently rebranded as Gemini Notebook. On May 21, Huxe announced that it was shutting down: removing its app from the Apple and Google app stores, discontinuing the service, and deleting user data. The company also said that its team would move on to other things and would not continue developing the product.
Apple notified the European Commission of the deal on June 9, shortly after Huxe's announcement. The filing does not reveal what Apple plans to do with the technology or the team.
One possibility is that Apple could add similar features to its Podcasts app, but it hasn't confirmed that it plans to do so. Spotify has introduced its own features that use artificial intelligence to create podcast content. It's unclear how many listeners believe personalized audio can replace regular podcasts.
