Apple unable to meet demand for iPhone Duo, Mac and iPad

Apple reports that hardware supply constraints for the iPhone Duo, Macs, and iPads will persist due to an ongoing memory shortage and rising component costs, with purchase obligations increasing by $33 billion between Q2 and Q3.

Demand exceeds production

Pre-orders for the iPhone Duo are already being pushed back to January 2027 due to limited supply. Similar availability issues are affecting Macs and iPads for the fourth quarter, largely due to ongoing memory component shortages.

Apple CEO John Turnus estimates that the cost of memory components will continue to rise in the fourth quarter and beyond. Material purchase obligations for product manufacturing increased by $33 billion from the second to the third quarter due to higher costs.

What does this mean for prices and sales?

So far, management has not indicated plans for further price increases on products, having already raised prices on Macs and iPads in June and phones in September. To address the situation, Apple plans to pursue lower costs for other components and temporarily rely on existing inventory. The company's chief financial officer, Kevan Parekh, said the company is carefully evaluating all factors.

Despite production issues, mobile achieved record quarterly sales, despite only releasing the Duo and the new iPhone 18 Pro. The Mac line also achieved record quarterly sales in new customers, with key drivers being the MacBook Neo and strong sales of the Mac mini for running local AI applications. The company's head noted that Apple had never sold so many Macs in a fiscal year as in this period.
