Apple's newly announced $299 HomeView smart display runs a hybrid watchOS and CarPlay OS capable of executing any CarPlay-compatible app.
Launching November 13 with countertop and wall options, its unique square 1:1 screen introduces distinct UI considerations for horizontal video and wide-angle camera feeds.
The square screen and software
The main feature of the device is the square display with a 1:1 ratio. The device's special operating system looks like a combination of the company's watch system and the car system, while supporting any application that already works with CarPlay.
When the device is not in use, it turns into a digital photo frame with special clock typography.
Where does the square screen help and where does it make it difficult?
This screen is well suited for functions such as controlling smart devices, calendars, messages and interactive cooking recipes.

However, viewing videos from streaming services has limitations, as regular rectangular videos will appear smaller and with large black bars. Additionally, wide-angle security cameras may lose their side points unless they are adjusted with bars.
At the same time, the company also announced the LG Video Doorbell, which uses dual wide-angle lenses instead of a square sensor. At launch, the available options for live video viewing will likely be limited to Apple's news and podcast apps, along with support for browsing and wireless display.
