AI startup has filed for bankruptcy protection with liabilities up to 100 million dollars, initiating a sale process for its assets.
Disney has placed an initial 20 million dollar acquisition bid, while platform services remain operational pending finalization.
The financial problems and the future of the platform
According to the company's data, its total debts are estimated at between $50 and $100 million. The platform's services continue to operate normally for the time being, but there is a possibility that they will be closed if a buyer is not ultimately found. The completion of the sale process is expected by early December.
As part of the deal, Disney is expected to provide transition support, leveraging staff previously hired from Character.AI. Disney had brought on the company’s former CEO Karandeep Anand as its chief technology officer, after previously sending the company to court over its use of animated characters. Google had also hired a significant portion of the company’s talent and co-founders.
Legal pressures and previous decisions
The company has been the focus of investigations and legal action. The state of Pennsylvania sued it for chatbots that impersonated licensed doctors, while Texas launched an investigation into misleading mental health claims. In addition, the platform had banned teenagers from chatting with its chatbots last year.
