OpenAI has retired its standalone browser, ChatGPT Atlas, moving its browser-centric features into a Chrome extension.
This integration for Chromium browsers allows for tab reading, grouping, and form filling with an explicit human-in-the-loop requirement before submission.
The update provides a more direct way for developers and users to trigger AI interaction via @Chrome mentions in prompts, though the feature set is currently unavailable on Gecko or WebKit-based engines like Firefox and Safari.
OpenAI retired its standalone ChatGPT Atlas browser app in August. The browser extension had been able to read open tabs via the sidebar since July.
How tab control works
When the user selects the work mode, ChatGPT can take control of the records. In practice, the tool can fill out registration forms using information and stop just before the final submission so that the user can review the data.
Additionally, the extension can send messages, download files, and group open tabs according to their topic.

Where are the new features available?
Users can mention the program directly in the web app or desktop app by typing @Chrome, or select a specific tab.
The new feature works in programs that are based on the same technology as Google Chrome, such as Microsoft Edge, Brave, Opera, and Vivaldi. However, it is not supported in Firefox and Apple's Safari.
The extension is available in the Chrome app store for all programs, including the free version.
Public attitudes towards artificial intelligence
Despite the new capabilities, an Omnisend survey from January 2026 showed that just over 20% of consumers in the United States are not at all comfortable with the idea of letting artificial intelligence tools make transactions.
