OpenAI rolls out mobile chat locking for ChatGPT on iOS and Android, allowing users to secure individual threads with a 4-digit PIN or biometrics.
Locked items move to a hidden folder away from standard history and search.
Note that this feature is not end-to-end encryption, and resetting your PIN permanently deletes all locked data.
With this feature, conversations are hidden from regular history, pinned conversations, and search. To open these conversations, someone will need to enter their passcode or use facial or fingerprint authentication, such as Face ID on iPhone and Android phones. All hidden conversations are collected in a new separate folder.
What else you need to know
The company clarifies that locking does not mean that data is encrypted end-to-end. Furthermore, the feature does not change the settings for how the system is trained or how long the company keeps data.

If someone needs to reset their account password, all locked conversations and files uploaded to that folder will be permanently deleted. OpenAI says this deletion cannot be undone or recovered.
When and where does it become available?
The new feature is rolling out gradually and may take a few days to appear for everyone. The feature is available to free users as well as Go, Plus, and Pro subscribers. On mobile devices, voice can be used normally with locked conversations, but the lock option cannot be used with scheduled conversations.
